Have no idea ...

Sup guys just a few questions from a confused person

My initial preference is medicine (parents haha) and I heard I need to take this secondary exam - umat for it along with the normal ATAR.

Now, I got some umat booklets at home etc, but wondering is this umat a musthave for medicine or do you just need a good atar for medicine courses?

Also, i'm still confused on what umat actually tests , is it just random IQ based questions ?

The UMAT is a must have to get into almost all of the undergraduate medicine courses in Australia. The link below contains a huge thread about UMAT and medicine in general.

The Umat is required for all undergraduate medicine courses in Australia, except for Griffith University (Gold Coast) and James Cook University (Townsville).

Both these university degrees require a very high atar score, due to the people who don't do so well on the umat, still wanting to study undergrad med.

Griffith Uni on requires your atar score.  (From memory mid-high 99s)

James Cook Uni requires your atar score, a written application, and an interview (Can't remember weighting of these in the combination)

If you are really keen on studying undergrad med, do the umat. These 2 options can be to fallback if your umat score isn't high enough, and you still want to do undergrad med.

JCU doesn't need a high (ie. big 99+) to get in :) I have mates who got CSP places with 97.xx. This is because they have a written application and an interview which does lower the ATAR threshold :)

But beware that it all depends on your written application. You have no idea how well your written application is until you got an interview offer (or not). So my suggestion would be take the UMAT and see how it goes.

This is all true - but JCU does not necessarily need a very high ATAR to get a medicine spot. They have the interviews and also their applications to ameliorate the application scores so that your ATAR does not need to be absolutely sky high.

That being said, in other univerities that do not require the UMAT, such as Griffith (QU) and Flinders (SA) - an ATAR of over 99.5/99.6 is pretty much needed for a spot

Hi!

As the other lovely people have mentioned on this thread so far, the UMAT is pretty much a requirement if you are wanting to do medicine. There are certain universities which do overlook the UMAT but each of these Uni's in it's own ways are quite competitive. For example for at JCU, your application must be very very good and for other guaranteed  pathways into medicine you will be needing an ATAR quite close to 99.80+. My advice would be to take the test, you have very little to lose from it and a lot more avenues into medicine may open up, if that is what you decide to end up doing.

Then there's not much you can do unless you've applied for Griffith or JCU or ANU and can make it there and/or have a 99.90+ ATAR for UoM or maybe USyd. :/

Options from there include:
- Gap year to resit UMAT
- Take a uni course (ideally Sci or Biomed) and aim for grad med entry
- As above but sit the UMAT again in first year and try for undergrad unis again (albeit not all of them - not Monash for one)

I don't think ANU has an undergraduate medical degree.

Interesting option but it seems incredibly difficult to get into and maintain.

Don't go into Medicine because of other people - this is your life, not theirs.

Medicine isn't as "perfect" as many people make it out to be, only do it if you're 100% sure you've want to. Read up on what it really is like to be a doctor, and ask yourself if you're willing to put yourself through years of sacrifice and sleep deprivation.

Am I the only one who actually finds it a little amusing that those who say "medicine isn't perfect" and "you shouldn't go into medicine if you don't want to" all seem to be either current medical students or aspiring medical students?

It's almost as if we say it to convince ourselves that we want to do medicine for the "right" reasons. Food for thought? :D
