Ooh thank you I think this will really help us in initiating a strong foundation of Chem 1+2 for a better result in units 3+4. Do you think a Chemistry tutor is necessary? I have a hopeless teacher for Chemistry..

Thanks
Y

Hey! Thanks for asking this question! I had a hopeless teacher last year too! For me , I think it is necessary to have a tutor, because personally I think   chem is relatively hard subject and the concepts are relatively new, although a few are taught in general science. But it seems like you have a passion for science, you'll be fine! Just do lots of questions and understand the concepts thoroughly!

If you need my tutors number( she's amazing!) , just pm me! Thanks!

I wouldn't be willing to say that a tutor is 'necessary'. It probably depends on your learning style, I know for me personally a tutor wouldn't really fit in with the way I like to work. There's more than enough resources available to you, the internet being a big one, that you can put the effort in yourself (something that you have to do with or without a tutor). These forums are always here when you need help too.

If you feel like you want a tutor and that it'd help, go for it, but I don't think it's worth getting a tutor just for the sake of it.

My chemistry teacher is actually hopeless. I think he has the adequate knowledge to be a genuis, but his flaws are exemplified by his vain attempts to deliver the information to students. Not being arrogant, but I can easily understand and pick up the content. But I think I require one sencondary source of advice/information that can help me. If I do get a tutor I'd only be looking at one in yr 12. I've been put on the waiting list for Isha (don't know if you've heard of her). Apparently she is really good and a lot (not hyperbole - literally 3/4 of my Chem class) is going to her in both yr 11 and 12. Personally, I wouldn't feel disadvantaged if I don't get it, but I would if I didn't have a tutor as secondary sources of info..

Thank you Teletubbies_95 for starting this thread :)
Anyone know any good ways of remembering the formulas for SulphATE, SulphIDE, SulphITE? As well as Nitrate and Nitrite? Thanks in advance!

Think of it as anything that has a "T" in it like the ates or the ites, that always means that oxygen is included.
Hence this would help you differentiate between sulphide, and the other two :) But apart from that I don't think I'm much of a help, cos I had to keep writing till it stuck in my head! Sorry  :) Maybe the more questions you do, the more it'll sink in!

An -ITE contains one less oxygen atom than an -ATE

SulphiDe- no oxygen S2-
SulphATE- SO42-
SulphITE- SO32-

IDE- no oxygen
ATE- contains one more oxygen than ITE

same with nitrates and nitrites
NitrATE- NO3-
NitrITE- NO2-
NitrIDE- N3-

Hope this helps.

Oh and I need some help. Our school is asking us to make a brochure and oral presentation on a chosen scientist. My group got Schrodinger since he was pretty much the only one left up on the board and is apparently the hardest one to learn about. I've been doing some research but don't really understand his contribution to the atomic theory about the wave equation and quantum mechanics or the shape of the subshells and orbitals and quantum numbers.

But I do get the s, p, d, f subshells and how to write the electron configuration for elements. Just don't quite understand what his contribution to the atomic theory really is.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
