How to price tuition

I'm thinking of tutoring! I've been going through this board looking for nuggets of wisdom (of which there are many!) but I wanted to know how much to expect as an English tutor. I have pretty much no tutoring experience but I have a first class honours degree, generally awesome marks, and professional writing experience. Plus, you know, I love books. So, what's a good amount to ask for?

I guess 25-30 is the basic rate, though I only charge 15-20, since I kind of think its unfair to charge more, after all they are students. :).

I guess it would be 30 for 1 hr, 50 for 25rs etc. :)
Will be offering Further Mathematics tuition for 2016
Dux of Further Mathematics: 50 for Further Mathematics
Mail me if interested.

Also, tutoring for Physics (44), and Methods (44). Low Hourly rates. =)

I'm a yr 12 student, so I'd expect to pay about 25/35 for an hour. If after a few lessons I think your good*, I'd up it to about 40/45.

Hope that helps :)

Yeah I think around $25-$35 is the pretty standard rate for someone coming right out of high-school. I'd think with your qualifications though it wouldn't be ridiculous to charge for more. I read somewhere on the forums that qualified teachers for the relevant subject could start at $50 and onward. In terms of what to expect, that's hard to answer. No one could begrudge you asking for a higher than standard price however, whether or not people would actually pay that is a different story. $40 seems legit I guess (no basis for this, just sounds alright).

-separate thought- depends on groups as well, I guess - I know Thushan tutors for about $30 an hour, which is pretty standard, however I think that's from every person within a group of five for the same hour. And I guess that's pretty cool 'cause Thushan's a monster and it's a solid price in terms of what it usually is, just in a group.

Start with $30 and then move upwards once you get the reputation to get students for higher prices.  :)

Also, make sure you familiarise yourself with the new English course!

The following minimum tutoring pay rates have been recommended by the Student Employment Officers' Association of Victoria (which represents all Universities and TAFE institutes):

 ■VCE students (Year 11 and Year 12) - $25 per hour
 ■Tertiary students(tutored by undergraduate) - $30 per hour

■Postgraduate students may charge an extra $5 per hour - negotiable
■Tutoring two students may be charged at time and a half - negotiable
■Tutoring three students may be charged at double time - negotiable

Eriny, as a quality post-graduate but lacking tutoring experience, I'd probably follow EZ's recommendation of $30/hr during your first year of it. If you find that you're good at it, you should really be charging $50/hr in the 2nd year due to your qualifications and academic expertise.
