I am REALLY confused about choosing subjects for first year at Bachelor of Arts. I am interested in doing two majors (Criminology and Psychology) and a diploma in languages (Italian) or either a major in Criminology and a minor in Justice and Law. I have not met the required study score of 25 for methods and therefore, am not able to do bachelor of science. For this reason, I have chosen to do bachelor of arts and thinking of transferring to bachelor of Science mid-year. I have heard about "Introduction to Mathematics" and "Unilearn Senior Mathematics". I am wondering what the differences are between those two in terms of requirements, cost of fees, required GPA and time etc ? I have heard that I can take them as my breadth subjects. If so, would that only require one slot of breadth subject from my maximum of 4/6 ?
Which option would be best for me to choose?

Because i would like to transfer to bachelor of science, I am thinking of doing science subjects as my breadth subjects as for me not to fall behind TOO much on science. I am willing to sacrifice my other subjects ,(I was thinking of doing italian and science related subjects as breadth) in order for me to get into bachelor of science by mid year this year.

So in short, what is the best way for me to get into bachelor of science?

Thanks in advance!

I think I saw your post on the UoM Facebook page...
I'm not really an expert in this field, and I'm sure all the older students could provide better assistance, but ringing 13 MELB or emailing the university is a pretty reliable way of getting assistance. You could also try the Student Centre?
VCE: Chemistry | Biology (2011) | English (2011) | Environmental Science | Mathematical Methods CAS

2013-2015: BSc [Zoology] @ UoM | DLang [German - DISCONTINUED]
2016: GDSc [Botany] @ UoM
2017-2018: MSc [Biosciences - Zoology] @ UoM

Summer: BOTA30006

S1: BOTA20001 | EVSC20004 | BOTA30003 | BIOL90001

S2: GEOG20009 | BOTA30002 | BOTA30005 | EVSC20003 | NRMT90002

Subject and major reviews incoming :)

If you're definitely looking to transfer into Science then I wouldn't be concerned at all with Italian or Criminology (I'm assuming you know you can't take Criminology in a BSci...).  I would do the following:

Semester 1:
Introduction to Mathematics (breadth)
Required IDF
Mind Brain and Behaviour 1
Another subject, but I'd probably choose another Science subject (as breadth) to get it out of the way (for instance you might pick Biology or if you haven't done Chemistry/Physics you might choose Fundamentals of Chemistry).  If you do choose an Arts subject (eg Graffiti to Terrorism or something), see below.

After you transfer:
Once you've fulfilled your maths prerequisite you should be good to transfer (assuming your ATAR was high enough) after Semester 1
Once you transfer your Psychology can be credited as Science
Your maths subject cannot be credited towards the BSci so you lose out on the subject (so you took it, but it doesn't go towards your degree because it no longer counts as credit after you transfer, it's just a vehicle to help you transfer)
Your Arts subject (not your IDF, though) can be credited as breadth
Your IDF is lost as they cannot be taken as breadths in other courses
If you took another Science subject instead of Arts subject you can credit it as Science

So basically when you start your BSci you will have 25 points, 12.5 of which might be Arts breadth OR Science elective and 12.5 of which is definitely Science
In your first semester of Science this means you can begin your diploma in Italian and you can take three other new subjects from wherever you like, including Mind Brain and Behaviour 2.

Personally I would take Introduction to Mathematics in the scheme suggested above rather than any other subject - it's offered through the Uni, it counts towards your course and so you can claim it on HECS etc.

thank you so much for your help!
Just some more, if you guys dont mind..
what does IDF mean?
Do you think I should just get rid of my criminology related subjects and take Italian 5 and 6 (I've done VCE italian) in order for me to get my diploma of languages faster ?
I received an atar of 83. So it's above the melb access atar requirement. Assuming I've gotten the required GPA for intro to maths, do you think I should take science related subjects like "Genetics & The Evolution of Life" ?

Im enrolling now but there are only two modules available for breadth but when I went to Academic advice day, they said i can take a maximum of 6.. is that for 3 years or 6 in one year? Also, when I've tried putting in Italian 5 for breadth, it wont let me. Does this mean I need to take a test in order to be admitted in the subject?
Thanks

Don't worry about your 'maximum breadth' when you're trying to initiate a transfer.  You should take all the breadth you can.  Have you taken Chemistry or Physics in VCE?

You need to take a placement exam for admission.  You could take Italian in addition to your Maths breadth, IDF and Psychology subject.  I would remove Criminology subjects if you're not keen on taking them.

I'm curious: why is it that you wish to transfer to a BSci?  If you want a degree in Psychology and Criminology surely Arts is more suited.  Is there another major under the Science bracket which you like more than Criminology?

An IDF is what old people like myself call an Arts Foundation subject.  They used to be called 'Interdisciplinary Foundation Subjects'.  There are something like six of them and you must take one as a part of your Arts degree in first year.  They act as 'prerequisites' towards a number of second year subjects and are really broad.  For instance you could take the subject 'Language' or the subject 'Power' and learn broadly about those topics.  However, I just looked it up and apparently things have changed since I was in Arts!  You only need to take one in first year now, so you could skip that altogether and replace it with something you can use as breadth.  Your Italian subject won't be breadth if you're planning on doing a diploma - the diploma is additional to what you do as your breadth subjects.  So you could still choose an Arts elective and credit it as breadth when you transfer.

Genetics and the Evolution of Life is only available semester 2 but you could take the other first year biology subject Biology of Cells and Organisms :)

OMG!! I'm in the EXACT boat as you! I'm doing a bachelor of arts in 2013 and then looking to transfer to science in 2014. Let me know how you go :)
