Ideas for independent studies for Year 10

Hi there,

I recently received a letter from my child's school who is starting year 10 tomorrow, asking that year 10 year do independent studies. Can you give me ideas on how you went about it.

The only thing that we have started is Maths. We are  already on the 8th chapter of Maths Quest 10A, doing quadratic equations.

What other independent studies, should my child look at ?

If by independent studies you mean working through the course at home, then I don't totally advise on it. Unless you're in s situation with people at home who can help, it will make your child feel totally bamboozled by the coursework because they might be trying to learn it ahead of time.

If on the other hand you mean study in general, for all subjects, in preparation for exams and what not, I'd recommend maths and English, but don't just dedicate all time purely to these subjects.

Remember, it's only year 10, it's not the end of the world.

Thanks Alecc. I also do not know neither what they mean by independent studies. I guess taking initiative to study on own to augment the school learning.

With matths, we are doing headway as I am able to help my child. I am an engineer and mathematically minded.

On the other hand, my child really needs help with English as she did her primary school at German only school overseas and her English is substandard. I am struggling to find an English teacher in my area in  Rowville. I can not help with English year 10 as English is not my native language. I placed a post, looking for an English tutor but no responses.

I think it's a good idea to accelerate you child's maths at home! :) Year 10 maths isn't much of a leap from yr9 and having a strong basic grasp of quadratics, linear, probability, etc will help a lot come VCE maths :)

I think other subjects - English, science, history, etc - are taught we'll enough in schools in yr10 to suffice for noe.

Thanks pi for your response. While I concur that all subjects are well taught at school for year 10, my child needs help with English. Her English's writing is substandard for the reasons mentioned above ( German primary school).

She feels intimated and her English teachers are not encouraging and honestly they do not are care. It not their problem. As a parent, I need to find the right teacher with the right motivation to augment her writing.

I guarantee that if your child listens attentively and does all the homework/reading set by the school for the next three years, she will be very well placed to succeed.  Other than that, she is only in Year 10, so simply reading a lot at home will be most beneficial-novels, books of interests, newspapers.
