To what extent do you agree?

For these questions, am I expected to state whether I agree or not? If so, where exactly should I state whether I agree or not, or do I not? I remember in year 11 my teacher took off marks because I wrote that I agree to a certain extent in first paragraph.

you don't need to be that explicit. usually u just state ur contention like usual in the first few sentences of your intro, just like any other 'discuss this blablabla' prompts. thats what i did at least

In any essay, you always have to make clear what side of the ledger you're on. This has to be under your contention in your introduction. However, you never do this by writing, 'I agree/disagree with [insert prompt].' Good introductions are able to integrate a contention in a more subtle manner, often by first looking at the text from a broader viewpoint, before narrowing down to the intricacies of the prompt.

It is good to see that in the example you were talking about that you only 'agreed to a certain extent'. In almost any essay, if you totally agree or disagree with the prompt, you make yourself seem narrow-minded and simple, whereas being able to see the other side(s) of the story shows complexity and deeper understanding.
