From the university's libraries. Duration will vary (from a few hours to a few weeks). It is free.

Yes. The time you can borrow it may vary between different books and editions, along with how many students take the subject.

Because often books for subjects are 1) only available for short term loans and that doesn't suit people who want to work at home 2) the textbooks may be a good reference that people want to own themselves

3) There aren't enough copies for everyone to borrow one

Why don't people just borrow and photocopy them?

I wish you luck photocopying 400 pages from a clunky textbook on a photocopier in less than 5 hours.

Better than spending $200 on a textbook.

I can't think of any required textbook where the cheapest price is $200, most are going to be under $100

Not really. Take Lenhinger Principles of Biochemistry, for example. That textbook has over 1100 pages in it, and it costs 10c per page to photocopy. This means you'd end up paying over $110 for a really crappy quality black and white photocopy of a textbook which only cost $150 to begin with... Not to mention the hours you'd have to spend getting that photocopy!

Prescribed textbooks for subjects are usually found in the Higher Use borrowing section of any of the major libraries. Eg) Brownless Biomedical, Ballieu.

They usually are overnight loans for the latest editions and 7 day loans for older editions. For undergraduate, an old edition will suffice. I remember back when I did Human Physiology back in 2nd year, I would borrow the old edition and renew them via the portal for a month. Self-return it and then re-borrow the book and I kept it for a whole year. So rat! But I guess the library caught on to what I was doing and changed it so that I wasn't able to re-borrow.

Protip: use Monash friends to borrow your textbook for multiple weeks, as it is not prescribed at the university and therefore not in high-use reserve.

Only problem with idea: requires Monash friends

My habit in the past has been to go the semester without the prescribed textbook, then borrow it a couple of weeks before exams. But I'm somewhat of a cheapskate.
The Finnish word pilkunnussija, which translates literally to “comma fucker,” is someone who risks his social wellbeing to annoyingly and persistently point out punctuation errors.
