Study Score

Hi guys,

I was just wondering what a possible study score I could get for Biology Unit 3/4? So far these are my results:

Outcome 1:
SAC 1: 17/20 (85%)
SAC 2: 13/14 (93%)
SAC 3: 14/16 (88%)

I just completed my first sac of outcome 2 today and I reckon I got about 90%. If I continue getting around 89% for the rest of my SACs, what kind of score can I be looking at. Does the fact that 50% of my biology cohort of 20 people get similar scores as me and the other 50% are getting 50-70% affect me and my score? By the way our SACs have been pretty straight forward and nothing exceedingly difficult. I'm really confused in how they work out study scores. Also what is an A+, A etc?

Thanks :)

I think what matters at the moment is your performance in comparison to your cohort; i.e. your rank. For the time being, keep doing what you're doing and try to top your class. That is the best advice I can give you! Those results are excellent and you should be very very proud!

Study hard!!

First off, it's impossible to be able to estimate your study score from here, but it's safe enough to comment that you're heading in the right direction for a 35-40+. You're averaging 90% at the beginning of the year which is a really good sign. You should continue this way, then score an A+ on the exam and you'll secure yourself a 40 ss (providing that your cohort performs well on the exam).

One thing to point out though is, if these SACs are easy, you're probably going to want to be scoring 100%. This is really vital, as if these are really easy, then mediocre students may be able to score 90%, taking high ranks but are clueless in the exam. By separating yourself from these students, you're able to position yourself with the high achievers (95%+ zone) which provides you that security, as you know that your SAC scores won't be scaled down as much.

Good luck.

Yeah I don't think I have a very high ranking, I might be about 6th out of the 20 people that are taking Biology 3/4 at my school. What kinds of scores have you guys been getting? What is considered at A+ on the exam is that over 90%? I am hoping to get above 40 since I'm in year 11, but I really don't think thats possibly since I have weak cohort and I have heard that I need to be ranked one for it not to affect me since .

Thanks guys for your help. Hopefully my results stay consistent. Good luck to you both!

Okay so my cohort is also pretty weak. I have managed to get #1 ranking by getting 46/50 in total for Outcome One of Unit 3. This may have been 6th position in another cohort. Its all about how you rank relative to everyone else. Secondly, the exam depends on the state's performance. Typically the cut off for a hard exam is about losing 15 marks to get an A+; although you go against your morals of logic, you better start hoping for a hard Bio exam this year!!

i was wondering the same thing... ive had four biology sacs so far and my cohort is really strong (some students are repeating biology 34 from last year), im no where near ranked one and some of our sacs have been hard, out of a cohort of around 40 students im guessing im in the top 13 definitely not higher than rank 6. my sac scores so far have been:
1. 30/35
2. 33/35
3. 34/35
4. 35/40

What do u think a suitable study score will be for me if i continue getting A's and A+'s in my sacs?

As mentioned earlier, this is something you can never actually predict until you've:
(a) Completed your SACs and have a fair understanding of your rank
(b) You have completed the exam.

Remember, your raw SAC scores are there purely to rank the cohort. It is the exam that really counts; you basically have to match your A+ in a SAC with and A+ in the exam, which will give you two A+s and hopefully a decent 40+ Score. Other than than, especially now, its way too early to predict. Seeing from your marks, however, you look like you're doing well and you have a good foundation in 3/4 Biol, which means that if you can reinforce that in your exam, you'll do well. For me right now, its about making sure you don't neglect SACs and take them EXTREMELY seriously for the sake of your ranking, and then actually simultaneously ensuring you are prepared for the exam from now. For example, don't wait until the end of the term/semester to start practice questions. Do practice questions whilst studying the topic, because then you'll really look at the depth you are required + what types of questions you can potentially be asked, and in what ways.

Good luck yazza :)

thanks for the reply.
i know its tough to predict but i just wanna know the effect of having a strong cohort but being ranked just above average but not too high at all. what happens if you get an a in the exam and not an a plus, what study score are u looking at there?

Once again, very hard to determine. However, I think a high 30 (probably 33-37), if its a high A. I know a friend who got an A+ for SACs, A for Exam 1 and A+ for Exam 2, and managed a 40.

so an a+ would be like most certainly in the 40s?

Certainly not. A+,A+,A+ could potentially net you a 38.

Just try your best in every SAC and in your exams.

That's all you can ask, and you'll study score should reflect your hard work.

Stop obsessing about study scores/ numbers, it's really hard to predict and predictions are just predictions... they won't come true unless you make it come true.

Well I had 3 A's for bio and scored a 37 rank 2 and rank 1 scored 42 or 41? Anyways the matters is rank 1 scored A+ for both exams  (and A+ sacs). sacs don't mean a lot if you are top 5 because its the exam you have to kill.
2012: Biology [below expectations]
2013: English [below expectations], Chemistry [results pending way under expectations], Methods [below expectations-but happy], specialist [happy], physics [happy]
