LOL, my Dad just told me that I should study for the GAT because one of his workmates' son is studying for it. Not sure if I should really try and do some practice GAT's? What's the worst that can happen?

I don't know why, but I get the feeling that one will do better on the GAT if it was not prepared for? hmm.

Possibly. Having a look through the 2011/12 GAT's, and its really just general stuff. I mean they give you all the information you need to know, and you have to have your brain on, think, interpret and answer.

My damn school has enforced the importance of it so much that people actually HAVE been doing the previous GAT papers at home. XD

You can probably blame brother Paul for that one

Is it possible to get some sample GAT English responses that scored highly?
Maybe someone who scored highly can give us a sample response to what they did (as well as including the prompt).
Not sure if this has been asked, but I think it would cool to get a rough idea of what to expect in the GAT.

edit; Say you're going to write a persuasive essay for the 2nd task. Do you need to include a written explanation?

So just to clarify:

Section A writtten piece:
- Write an expository essay using the information provided without presenting an argument.

Section B written piece:
- Write a piece presenting an argument about a particular point of view.

Is there a word limit; will 700-800 words be sufficient per piece?

Hello Everyone!

Happy 'GAT Eve' as my English Teacher likes to call it. :p Below are some tips and comments that my English Teacher gave me for the GAT. This is her second Year as a GAT Assessor.

Good Luck!

Damoz.

WRITING TASK 1
Low-Range Response
* Brief
* Disorganised
* No structure of the material
* Limited understanding of the material

Mid-Range Response
* Attention to material
* Lack of structure and synthesis of material

High-Range Response
* Good control of material
* Demonstrates a good understanding on the material
* Sophisticated vocabulary
* DOES NOT START AT THE TOP LEFT CORNER AND GO AROUND THE PAGE TO TRY AND GET ALL THE INFORMATION INTO THE PIECE.

WRITING TASK 2
* Develops a very good line of argument
* Has a strong 'voice'

In Writing Task 2, I think the main thing to note is that you do not have to write an essay. e.g. A speech is completely acceptable.

Hope this helps you out a bit.

Yes, correct on both accounts.

No word limit, but try to aim for around 500 words. You only have 30 minutes on each task, so they aren't expecting a lot from you.

I don't think anyone will do it, I wouldn't dare because it'd be embarrassing if I was the only clown who did it. haha
