UMAT 'last minute' concerns
« on: July 12, 2013, 04:19:41 pm »

Hi,

So I've a few things that have been skirting around in my head that I want to bring out into the open:

* is there a supervisor in the exam room who is walking around?

* what are the desks set up like - are they clustered in a table, or are there individual desks in columns?

* how big is each desk?

* what things are we allowed to bring into the exam room?

* do we fill the necessary details on the answer sheet as soon as we walk in, or when the supervisor instructs us etc..?

* how much time do we get to fill in things like our name and stuff on the answer sheet? 5min? Also, we fill in the answer sheet before reading time right (this is a given, but I just want to confirm)?

* could there potentially be any obstacles that may be blocking the clock (like a pole or something)?

^ so yeah. These are just a few things which I want answered & thanks!!  :D

* is there a supervisor in the exam room who is walking around?

Yep, there should be many :)

* what are the desks set up like - are they clustered in a table, or are there individual desks in columns?

I'd imagine they'd be set up like every other exam in columns and rows. They did this in my year.

* how big is each desk?

Might help:
Yeah the venue and tables were great.

Nice and roomy, relatively large table that was stable for most people and if it wasn't stable, they had heaps of people coming around with cardboard.

Heating was also good. Not so hot as to cause perspiration, but not so cold as to induce shivering or uncomfort.

All in all, optimal conditions for a bit of UMAT :P

* what things are we allowed to bring into the exam room?

http://umat.acer.edu.au/sit/prohibited-items

Quote from: ACER
When you report to the test centre, you must bring your:
- UMAT Admission Ticket
- photo-bearing identity document; and
- pencils (medium soft HB), and eraser.

You may bring a bottle of drinking water into the test centre with you. All other equipment, such as note paper, pencil cases, rulers, coloured pencils, scissors, etc. are prohibited and their use will be considered an act of unethical behaviour.  Mobile phones, calculators, stopwatches, dictionaries, audio or recording devices of any kind, food and bags will not be permitted in the test room. There will be only limited facilities for the storage of personal belongings at the test centres.  You are advised to bring only essential items, as neither the test centre nor the UMAT Office can be held responsible for the security of your belongings.

* do we fill the necessary details on the answer sheet as soon as we walk in, or when the supervisor instructs us etc..?

As with every test in your life, when the chief supervisor instructs you.

* how much time do we get to fill in things like our name and stuff on the answer sheet? 5min? Also, we fill in the answer sheet before reading time right (this is a given, but I just want to confirm)?

I think you usually get to do it beforehand (although 5mins seems a bit generous), but if not, it's not a big deal given that everyone is in the same boat etc etc. Just follow the clear instructions you'll get given on the day and you'll be fine.

edit: having memories of doing this after reading time for a minute or two, I dunno wait to see on the day

* could there potentially be any obstacles that may be blocking the clock (like a pole or something)?

Probably not, there are multiple clocks too. If you have a problem with your seat (wobbly, bad placement, etc) contact a supervisor asap and it will be sorted out.

Regards.

Thankyou immensely for that pi  :)

A couple more questions (will probably keep asking questions like these until the 31st of July  :P ):

* approximately how long before the exam should one reach the test venue in order to get comfortable and go through the identification process?

* are there multiple rooms at the venue, or does everybody do the test in the same room (pretty sure the answer is self-explanatory here given the vast number of people sitting the paper, but I thought it's better to double-check)

Well the time it says on your admission ticket is a good time to get there, if not 15mins beforehand. In reality it'll take more than an hour to get everyone through the identification after which point they'll start. So the time on your ticket is not the start of the test time by any means :P

Large halls, it's Flemington Racecourse (is it? last year it was) and I'm pretty sure they have large spaces with tables aligned as my above post :)

2 weeks before is supposedly the agenda.  :) So that means probably this Sunday, Monday, Tuesday or something.

another question: are the answer sheets on medentry the same as the UMAT answer sheets (do they ask for the same things like initials/DOB) or does the UMAT answer sheet ask for something other than the medentry answer sheet?

A quick Google suggests that they are permitted, provided they do not have a stopwatch capability.

I'm getting paranoid about my watch ceasing to work during the UMAT. Should I take two?  :P Or maybe I should just change my battery...

I'm 8am arrival, I'd freak if I was afternoon, research suggest the brain's ability to handle difficult situations is better in the morning, nice and fresh, I always have an afternoon lull..  ::)
