Dux is an informal award (though some schools may give out prizes) for the person who receives the highest ATAR at your school. This is usually an ATAR of 85+, depending on the area :)

Like Uprising said most schools will give out some sort of award. I know a school that used to  give away a gift voucher whilst others just give certificates or small trophies.

Different schools do it differently. For example mine went through all the subject awards and dux before atars were released, I think even before exams happened (it may have been the evening of muck up day). As a result our dux is given for who the teachers think will do their best in exams/perfomances in sacs. Normally our school only gives one, but in our year they gave three, as they couldn't split the three of us. In the end atar wise, the three of us ended up with the 1st, 2nd and 4th highest atar scores for our school (there were 2 people who got the same for 2nd, one of which wasn't given the dux award). Normally, for our school at least, who they pick for dux normally ends up with the highest score, since they can tell who will most likely do well. I was the one who got the 4th highest and the dux, to be honest I think the teachers were expecting me to do better for my English study score.

tl;dr, it depends on how your school does it, but a lot base it on what atar you actually get.

Yeah my school gives out subject awards (highest study score in each subject that year) top 10 awards (top 10 students based on ATAR) and dux (highest ATAR in that year) at an awards night, I think the same day results are released. It's obviously different at different schools, but at my school the dux gets $1000 to go towards their future which is nice, like a mini scholarship thing. Additionally, the dux gets to give a speech to the school at the start of my school's following year.

We had subject awards based on SAC rankings (given before results during our Speech Nigh), and a Dux award to the highest aggregate (usually in the 99.95) given at the next Speech Night (ie. year after).

We also had sport awards and club awards (debating, chess, etc.). Some awards had no recipients due to there being no outstanding candidate for it too.

Not necessarily.
The only male who received 99.95 at my school last year didnt receive dux.
No one knows explicitly why he didn't receive it, but I know as a fact his behaviour isn't what our principal would want our school to be represented by. (He was suspended 5+ times throughout years 7-11 and there's even a rumour that he was at one stage threatened with expulsion. Not to mention, he turned up to the year 12 formal drunk.)

Well that's probably because your principal didn't want to condone his behaviour by giving him the award. It's probably a punishment.

Good effort to pull a 99.95 with that party life haha (Y) Respect.

Well it appears so but although this would be 'the right message in the wrong way', I and most, if not all, of the other past/current year 12s have so much respect for him (read further below).
And to be absolutely honest, I actually kind of envy him for being able to balance his life so well.

Yes, I agree but him being such an oxymoron was such a slap to the school's face that they didn't bother giving him the award. But dang, I wouldn't have been able to do that.

I don't know what exactly our school gives out for the overall dux of the school (it's a certificate and an envelope, but I'm not sure what's in the envelope), but individual subject winners get a $25 book voucher to a book store 45 minutes away. The person who is dux of 3/4 Specialist gets the same prize as the person who gets the Year 9 Media award.

2013:
Literature (33) | Revolutions (39) | Methods (37) | Chemistry (35) | Specialist (28)

ATAR: 94.15

i was just talking to my friend who got dux last year, he said he got some sort of trophy, a certificate, a wooden plate with his name on it that is kept in the awards hall at school. He said that each year the trophy is passed on to the new DUX by the one preceding them. If i get it, im keeping that Bi**h.  :D
