Hi all,
I've been offered yr 10 admission for both Mc Rob & JMSS this year. I was just wondering which school you guys think is better; some advantages & disadvantages..
I really like both schools, and wouldn't mind going to either of them so I need some advice. Quick replies would be great, as I have to make a decision very soon!
Thanks c:
& congratulations to everyone else who got admission! Hard work paid off.

Having not been to either and having no personal experience on the issue, from what I hear, MacRob is better.

Hey !
Well done! :)
Personally ( :P ) , you should go to MacRob! I love it so much and the girls you meet are so amazing and dedicated to watever they do. Education wise, some of the teachers are great , but some of the teachers are pretty bad . And sometimes you feel like your self learning , which I did for one of my VCE subjects last year .
In terms of co-curricular , it is lacking. I wish they offered more activities! Nevertheless, the music program is quite good !

JMSS , I can't really say anything about. But I heard the teachers are really good! :)
Best of luck , and feel free to PM me , if you have any more questions.

Didn't they send out offers ages ago? I have a friend that got into jmss... Info night was like last week? O.o.

Theyre very different schools. What are you looking For in a good school?
No school is better in my opinion. It's just what you look for in a school.
Macrob. We'll established, probably the strongest cohort in the state (in terms of VCE results). Good facilities. (Heard jmss is lacking in sporting facilities and stuff)

JMSS. new school, I've also heard there's some really good teachers, links with Monash University, their hosting Some international science fair in 2015..., exclusive science electives, It's coed and Strong cohort...

They sent out offers to JMSS a while back & I accepted, but a couple of days before the info night I was offered admission to Mc Rob. It came as quite a surprise but I figured I would research both schools and join the school I feel 'suits me' more.

Hi trying to be smart,
and firstly congrats on getting in to both schools ,
I also got accepted jmss this year and almost made it into Melbourne high last year .
Personally their an abundance of pro and cons to going to both schools . For example with Mac Robs has better V.C.E marks then JMSS .But they also put a lot of pressure in you to study especially  at macrobs , according to some of my friends who go their . Personally its your choice on were you wanna go its really the one which suits you best and facilitates your interests .

Congrats on ur achievement  8)
two selective schools..impressive !

mc rob may have a strong cohort, so does jmss
if you like science, im presuming you do, jmss is for you
jmss is co ed, so its more like a workplace..prepares you in terms of working with both genders
jmss has really good cocurricular activities..theres a gr8 range
all the teachers at jmss are experienced & inspirational so that's always a +
if u have any questions, just pm me

ive heard that mc rob put a lot of pressure on you, and my friends have said that some teachers use the memorising approach to teaching

lucks with your decision :)

I can't really tell who in my course was at co-ed or single-sex schools from behaviour etc. I would say this isn't an issue.

In fact, girls perform better academically in a single-sex environment.

Firstly, CONGRATZZZ!!!! I'm so happy for you in getting into both of the schools :)

Anyway, onto your question, I'm not sure if you've considered these points, but do:
- Why do you like either of the schools?
- Pros and cons for going to macrobs and jmss, this would differ a lot from person to person. E.g. Jmss is closer for me and it would mean less travelling time. Some points like that :)
- Is co-ed a better option or single-sex... idk, but this is something many people ask themselves, same as me :P But if you don't mind either, I don't think this will matter much to you :)

Umm... well I have to agree Mcrobs has a very high reputation in terms of ATAR and all, but Jmss is an establishing school and could do the same in a way.

I guess the final question to ask is, "Does this school, its atmosphere and background emphasis really match my future assets?" You probably have a rough idea of what you're interested in etc. :)

Good luck :D

LOL don't go to macrob if you're looking for sport facilities. But the sport program is pretty good and some of the teams do really well.

Music is great <3

And personally I find that there are plenty of co-curricular activities, if you make the time to look for them.

Macrob all the way :P

Personally, I would go to MacRobs. Only because JMSS is still a recent school. I would also go to MacRobs because studies have shown that females perform much better in single sex schools in comparison to co-ed schools, and also because it's not awkward when you need to talk about bra size or tampons (kidding). But honestly, go for MacRobs, you'd feel more secure in a way

I have 2 students from JMSS - their teachers often test them on things which are not on the course. I would go to mac.rob (if i were a girl...)

Firstly... congratulations on both offers 'tryingtobesmart'

I'm just going to give a JMSS perspective (since no-one has LOL) but really it is a great school and I'm glad I didn't accept my offer when I got into MHS (so I was in the same situation as you but just being a guy LOL)

Before anything happens... have you considered: Travel time, prestige(?) and subject opportunities?
Elaborating on the latter, JMSS has little subject opportunities in terms of the Humanities department (E.g No Legal Studies, Business Management). We do offer subjects catering for Humanities but not a lot really....

As 'teletubbies_95' has stated:
Quote
the girls you meet are so amazing and dedicated to watever they do
is true however you are heading into Year 10 where people have formed social groups already from Year 9 onwards. It'll take time fitting in (not saying you won't) but at JMSS everyone is all new and you'll bond really quick as a cohort at camp and at school because everyone is new and ready to 'fit in.' Talking about nerdy stuff is perfectly fine (science pick-lines (Y) ) and most of us share the same interest in you (being Maths and Science).

JMSS offers pretty amazing opportunities in the field of science and ones that aren't necessarily offered at Mac.Rob. Although Mac.Rob offers programs which JMSS don't cater for, we are a science school and we cater for that particular field. Such things include Supercomputing Conference, International Science Fairs and International Student Science Fairs (which JMSS hosts in 2015 which you'll be here for [hopefully]) and many more.

JMSS is located at Monash University (Clayton) and we go over to the university to do stuff and pretty soon you'll be accustomed to the campus itself and get a little taste of 'uni life' (not saying all but the you get to soak up the feel of it etc.). We leech off Monash Uni's Internet so it's pretty quick too (free wifi on your smartphones or whatever too)

Not really necessary but we have boys... ;) (not that it'll have an influence on your decision but some of them are pretty......)

I'll have to agree and say some of the teachers aren't that great (but some are amazing).
I have 2 students from JMSS - their teachers often test them on things which are not on the course. I would go to mac.rob (if i were a girl...)
Depending on year level but if it's Year 10 then wouldn't really matter because it's Year 10 and not VCE (however if it's in Year 11-12 then it could possibly but I wouldn't have a clue being in Year 10 :P)

There are things that could be improved on as well (E.g Co-curricular activities) but overall the environment at JMSS is pretty good and personally I enjoy being at JMSS.

Good luck on your decision and if you need to ask any more questions then feel free to PM me :)

I would go to Mac.Rob if I were you, the extra-curricular programs are excellent according to my sister (she got in for the Year 11 cohort and still was able to connect with the cohort quite well)
2012 ATAR: 99.20
2013-2015: Bachelor of Biomedicine (Microbiology/Immunology: Infections and Immunity) at The University of Melbourne
2016-2019: Doctor of Medicine (MD4) at The University of Melbourne
