What can I do before year 12 starts?

Hey guys.
I'm eager to do the best I can next year and I know the summer holidays are a great time to start learning and shouldn't be wasted.
Sooo what could any of you suggest to do before I start HHD /during the year.
What can I do on the holidays that would be beneficial?

Any topics I should start learning earlier?
I'm confused as to how much of the content I need to remember, because there is so much data and figures in the book? Do I need them or just the general idea of each chapter/an understanding of how to apply it? Are definitions really important?

Anything else that might be helpful would be appreciated too. Thanks!

Learn all the definitions for sac 1
e.g. burden of disease, hale, life expectancy etc

Yep! Most of the definitions from 3/4 (in the first SAC), you learnt in 1/2. Apart from those definitions and the work around them, the first SAC has the determinants of health (and they're a little different from the 1/2 version, so just go over that) and then differences in certain population groups (which I reckon just read the section in the book for background knowledge and you should be good). It also has this little area that compares Australia to 4 other similar countries - just read the book for that bit too, and you don't need to remember any of the statistics! :)

Guys I only doubled with Arts because I couldn't let go of Psych and wanted to keep doing it as a major at least, but I took International Studies on a whim after the info session just because I needed a minor, and I love it so much! It's 3:29am and I had to share this, I think I'm majoring in it bye.

With the determinants, like how they just have social and not social environment community/family and stuff?
Teacher always mentioned it but I forget.

Apparently it's hard to do well in hhd because so many people do it?

I was just reading the new study design, and it says you need to know the social, behavioural and biological determinants of health (As we did this year), as well as the physical environment as a determinant of health in explaining variances in health status. So if you want to get started on determinants of health, don't forget the physical environment :)

Yeah I knew about physical environment too but just didn't mention it, nor did I mention behavioural. But I find them quite simple. Thanks :)

You don't need to remember any data as such! :)
Just know your definition and start doing some questions, so you get into the hang of things! :)
And if you need any sorta help, post your questions up on the HHD board! :)

Heyy! :D

Download the new study design and have it with you - it is literally the best guide for knowing what to study (because HHD textbooks drain it sometimes :P). Make sure you read the key knowledge dot points in relation to the key skills - the key skills tell you what to do with the key knowledge dot points :) Learn your definitions for the health status indicators and you'll be great! :) Also keep a look out for those sneaky definitions e.g. U5MR - "per 1000 live births" :P Also, know the difference between determinants and dimensions of health! :) Dimensions are a way of categorising Health; determinants tell us how health gets affected (either positively or negatively) by a particular factor (determinant) :) Also, getting familiarised with the NHPAs (maybe by watching some videos on youtube) would be good :D In fact, watch a lot of videos relating to health campaigns and VicHealth campaigns (youtube is a God send for this as well as the AIHW website and VicHealth websites :) ). And definitions are quite important in HHD! :) But luckily VCAA knows we're not memorising machines so we don't need to memorise any statistics or figures from our textbook (so dont be overwhelmed when you see a lot of data in your book! VCAA will always provide the data for you in the exam and you'll use that to answer Qs) :) As for whether it's hard to do well in HHD because a lot of people do it - don't worry about a "lot of people" :D If you work hard of your own accord, you will do well! :D :D The number of people that take the subject shouldn't affect you so long as you work hard, know your content well and have good practice answering Qs! :) I agree that HHD is a major content overload and it does get hard at times but HHD's A+ cutoff isn't that high so doing well is all the more possible (and you'll learn to love it I think! :D). All the best for next year! :) :)

Everyone has made really good suggestions but I will still put in my input

-Make sure you know all the definitions for the first sac and all the other ones in the study design.
-Put them on cue cards or poster or lists, how ever you learn best, this will save time later.
-Do you your holiday homework
-then read through the book, especially things you find interesting, I read the millennium goals and therefore knew what they were when we came to learning them in class.

Hope I helped! :)

You'll love health :)

Learn all the definitions for sac 1
e.g. burden of disease, hale, life expectancy etc

I didn't do Health 1/2. Learning these definitions was the only thing (apart from rest!) I did in the holidays for Health 3/4. Best of luck!

I think it's really beneficial just to lightly read the textbook and get your head around the major concepts coming up and the subject. Get to know your Determinants of Health really well and all 3 dimensions, plus learn all your key definitions off by heart and ensure you explain things in full :)

these are good :) but you dont really need to be able to define a trend

and we were told to include maternal mortality rate :)
