For English Language, it is not required to learn the IPA
but if you use it in examples for an essay, then it would show deeper understanding
so it would be best to learn the IPA specific to your examples rather than the whole IPA itself

Will be tutoring Accounting throughout 2014, please PM me if interested

On a side note (actually come to think of it, it's why IPA was developed LOL), explaining phonology in IPA is so much easier :)

Just do heaps of transliteration, that's the best way to go by it. I taught myself the Russian alphabet (Cyrillic) by listening to words and just writing them down, then checking. That's probably a good way of doing IPA. Just get text and transliterate it :)

Pick up your favourite novel and start transliterating it.

'Tis quite a lot of fun.

Hi psyxwar  - you don't need to know the IPA off by heart indeed. Just make sure you know the common ones that you will be discussing in your examples in the essay writing component of the course, but most of this should be prememorised before you go into the exam/sac anyway.

Hope it helps!
