Need help buying work clothes~
« on: December 05, 2013, 03:01:18 pm »

I recently got a job and need some more professional attire. Sadly, walked into Target and Big W and it seems EVERY department store has recently turned into a plus size shop! As a result this means I can't find any well-fitting blazers and blouses in my size. I'm a size 4-8 in tops and would like to know if there's any shop that stocks business clothes in these sizes and at an affordable price~ Suggestions please~

For the record I am NOT underweight, I am actually rather chubby but I have a smallish torso >_<

I don't know of shops as such...but have you perhaps looked online? You're sure to find something there :)
If you don't know the answer to a question, chances are it has something to do with changing the surface area to volume ratio or resonance.

Don't buy business clothes online. It's hard to tell quality and business clothes should be tailored or at least fit well.
Try Myer or DJs...

Alternatively, try Asian stores, or places like UCutie which sell those random good quality clothes. Also try Cotton On, they have a decent range of blazers and some what semi-formal wear. If you're looking for basics, also try Supre- even though they are generally very teeny bopper you can find good quality basic formal wear at a higher but decent price.

If you're a smaller size, ebay also works fine, just get the appropriate size ie Small. They are also cheap as they are from China but it would take a few weeks for it to arrive, and are decent quality but obviously not branded. Lemme know if you need examples, more than happy to do some online window shopping :P

You can always go for loose blouses and it doesn't matter if they're not as well fitting because they're supposed to be loose. I've never been able to find size 4s anywhere but Myer and DJs does have a few 6s and 8s are easy enough to find.

Hmm... I'm assuming you definitely mean nice, professional clothes but not full-on corporate wear if you considered places like Target. In that case I definitely recommend all the random Asian clothes shops they have at places like Highpoint. Asian sizes are generally much smaller to start with, and they're usually reasonably priced.

Buying online is kind of like the quality lottery. If you do decide to do that, make sure you check what material the item is made from, and buy based on measurements in centimetres, not just the size number.

Sorry to bump this thread, but does anyone know of good places to buy full business wear in Melbourne, and possibly accessories (looking for new handbags, possibly like longchamps bags)? I'm going to be in Melbourne around boxing day sales so if things will be cheaper there than in the US I'd like to get them in Australia.

Like... Suits? Or assorted corporate wear? I work at an investment bank, but I don't deal directly with clients so I rarely wear a full suit. Can't really offer much advice on shopping for suits coz I bought mine overseas, but it's definitely worth investing the money in one or two good suits. Buy the best suit you can reasonably afford, pay attention to the material, and if you can only afford one good suit then buy a black one.

Women's corporate wear is more flexible than men's, but that can also make it more challenging to know what to buy. If you're shopping because you've just got a new job where you'll have to wear corporate clothing, then my best advice is to buy a week's worth of reserved, plain corporate clothes. Black suit (skirt or pants, whichever your preference) as well as neutral coloured business shirts. Wear those for your first week and pay close attention to what the other women in the office are wearing. Then go shopping on the weekend to fill out your closet.

As for actual places to shop... I usually try to spend no more than $50 on a skirt, $40 on a top or $100 on a dress. Your suit is more important than the shirt underneath, so sink your money into that. It's perfectly plausible to buy nice business wear in this price range, and you shouldn't feel compelled to pay more than that. In saying that, I have paid more on occasion for something particularly flattering or whatever, but I have also paid much less on occassion.

Tops I reckon it's easy to get away with buying it on eBay. Get a tape measure out and measure yourself, don't just go with size numbers. Even if you end up with a couple of duds, it's so cheap buying online that it doesn't really matter.

Skirts and dresses I think it's worth going to a physical shop, especially figure hugging stuff like pencil skirts. Asian shops. I live in the Western suburbs, so for me that means a trip to Highpoint. There's also some Asian shops kind of underground in the CBD, but I'm having trouble remembering which street they're on. One of them was called *something* Angel or Angels *something*. I've only got my phone, otherwise is google it for you. I also personally like Portmans, but go to one in the CBD coz they intentionally stock more business-y stuff. Also Cue, but their stuff is usually at the high end of my price range. Also I haven't been in ages, but last time I went to DFO there was cheap last-season business stuff, just don't buy anything cutting edge, fashion statement... aim for timeless classic (or at least "I can wear this for at łeast a year without looking like a tool").

Thanks so much! Yeah, it's for an internship and I don't know which desk I'd be placed on yet, but the people I met at interviews weren't dressed super formally. I have a black skirt suit which isn't amazing quality from interviews, but I have no other business clothes. I'll definitely check out the Asian stores in the CBD, but I'm not sure how well the clothes will fit (I'm about a size 10 in Australia). Thank you! By chance, do you know anywhere to buy good handbags in Melbourne? I was thinking about buying a Longchamp one online, but maybe there's a better option.

7 Angels? Is that the name of the shop you were thinking of Fyrefly? As for the Asian stores, most 'Main' Shopping centres would have them, the Westfields and all. Would defs recommend DFO's as well, and Target!

Sorry appianway, but I'm not a handbag girl. Mine cost like $30. I buy big ones so I can put my heels/flats in them coz I walk a lot.

Yeah, that's it. I don't think that one is underground, but there's a couple of big ones near there that you go down an escalator or stairs to get to basement level.

We're the same size, so I think you'll be fine. I have trouble with the bust measurement in shirts sometimes (a bit tight across the chest), but otherwise it's usually fine.

Good luck with your internship!! =D
