I remember I finished the entire core during the holidays for further maths. This helped because when I came back to school, it was pretty much revision for me so I aced the SAC. Also in further maths, the quicker you finish the course the better, because this gives you more time to tackle those practice exams!

what should i do if i don't get certain parts of core? i haven't encountered any problems so far, but what happens if this scenario comes along?

Also, would you recommend on starting on the modules?

cheers

If it comes down to that, then you have a wide range capable people to answer your questions here on AN. :)

Its entirely up to you. I completed the Core + one module over the holidays, but there are some who do the whole course (wouldn't recommend it though) and those that just do the Core. If Further is not the only subject you want to get ahead in then I suggest just doing the core and spend the rest of your Summer holidays getting ahead of your other subjects (and ofc have a social life as well, you don't want to go insane :P).

I've already finished FM last year, but just wondering -- is it good to advise people to start ON one of the last/or hardest core they will be doing? Because I was thinking about telling others to do the core the school will be offering last/the hardest one so that my friend can have a head start.
I actually have no idea what I'm saying or talking about.

Just the core. I assure you, it's not that hard if you come from an average maths background. Most of the hardest stuff in further mathematics are the modules.

i agree with you. Its quite easy, but its so long and tedious which makes me not interested in doing it. That being said, I've done the first 4 chapters, should this be sufficient when coming back next year?

Not sure what you are asking here. Are you asking whether you should advise your friend to do the core and one of the hardest modules?

Are you using Essential Maths or Math quest for your textbook? Because the first 4 chapters in essential maths are the basics. Chapter 5 (regression) is when it really begins. I don't know about math quest though. However, doing the entire would be best, but if you REALLY don't want to do the whole core, then you should at least do up to Time series.

Yeap, using essential maths. I guess i will finish Core then, seeing i have about another month, it also should get me prepared for TSFX so i can absorb as much info as i can.

Do you recommend me making notes already, for each chapter? or wait till the start of the year. It is a bound book subject, so really the only notes i would get are from the teacher writing on the board?

Yes, yes I would. But by notes I would recommend a bunch of problems followed by detailed worked solutions. And don't wait till the start of the year, you should construct your bound reference from the moment you start further, that way there will be less hassle later on.
Anyway, you should check out Stick's thread on Constructing a bound reference for Further Mathematics fore more info.  :)

He says split your page in half, on one side the question, on the other the full worked solution. Wouldn't the other method os just copying the question and working it out UNDER it work?. Doing his method will only fit, what, 5 questions on a page - this is because of all the tables, and graphs etc.?

You might want to PM Stick about that. But coincidentally, that's how I set up my log book as well, I just found it to be an easier way than just working it out under the question, it sure made the book look neater and heaps more organised. But everyone has their own ways. If you think doing the other method is easier for you, than by all means do it.
Oh yeh, about the graphs and tables, I always redrew them so I can fit it in.
But you should PM Stick for his opinion :)

As tabs arnt allowed into the exam so it can make it easier to finsh the segment you want, how would you distinguish between each core/module?

To answer honestly.........gut feeling/instinct. Its actually not as crazy as it sounds, throughout the year when you make/update your logbook and use it for SACS and tests, you will develop the skill to just flip to the module you want during the exam since you would have done the exact same thing during tests/SACS. Alternatively, you can just number each page and make a contents page.
But remember, the more you use your log book throughout the year, the less you will use it in the exam.
