So basically I bombed English and ended up getting an ATAR lower than I had expected, (Below the clearly in of 95),
However it is still above the minimum ATAR of 93 to be considered...
What would be my chances this year of still getting my first preference of Commerce at Melb.?

Do you have SEAS? If not, your chances are small since I doubt the clearly-in will drop below 94. Cut offs fluctuate every yr depending on demand - so theres definitely always a possibility.

Have a look at monash or rmit as well if you dont recieve an offer from melb.

My second preference was Commerce/Engineering at Monash, as I planned on studying a post-graduate in engineering at Melbourne.
I have actually been told by quite a number of people that the system at Melbourne is not as good as Monash.
Is anybody able to give me more insight into these claims?
Thanks

They haters.

No, but seriously, it's because you are forced to do 5 years for a professional engineering degree. You don't have a choice of doing a 4 year B.Eng. If you're comparing a BComm/BEng vs a BComm/ME, it's really almost exactly the same. Have a read of my thread in my signature about the BComm double with Engineering and you'll get a better insight.

Have you participated in any other Melbourne-Uni related groups/competitions? (Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars, Melbourne Uni Maths Comp).

Great results/selection in the above two would also boost your chances slightly.

As far as I can remember, my brother was able to get into his course (Commerce double degree back when melb had them) with around 0.8 ATAR off the clearly-in for that, but then again it usually varies each year. Shouldn't fluctuate too much, but good luck!

Thanks for the input,
can't recall participating in anything Melbourne Uni. related besides some seminars...
I'm 1 off, and I'v been hearing that less students have been applying this year for Commerce at Melb. so my chances are higher..
However, I'm currently thinking about going to Monash over Melb. anyway as people have been saying it is better for Engineering... Not worth worrying about though till the 16th I guess.

I've heard that the "rank" for engineering is better at UoM but I agree that the structure is better at Monash (it's shorter too! 4 years compared to minimum of 5 years at UoM)

OP -

Unlikely. You're eligible for a place, yes. However, unless demand for Melb Commerce drops to the point that the ATAR clearly-in becomes 93, then you won't get a place in the course, unless you have SEAS. If you have SEAS, you may be considered since your ATAR is above the minimum.

Hey guys,

Not gonna start a new thread since I only have a minor query:
Can someone clear up any major differences between Commerce (Acturial Studies specifically) at Monash & Melbourne?

Thanks

Not sure if this info is still relevant, but 2 years ago; Monash's program had not yet achieved exemptions for Stage 2 Actuarial Exams. (Melbourne offers Stage 2 exemptions for Honours Students). This might've changed - best ask someone from Monash.

^ Yeah, it changed recently. Stage 2 exemption can be achieved at monash now in an honours year. Information on monash's program can be found here.

I know very little about actuarial studies at Melbourne (and at monash for that matter, only bits and pieces) so can't speak much about the differences. I know that in the past, Melbourne was way better than Monash for actuary, but from what I've seen monash have been really working on and pushing their actuary program, so maybe the gap is starting to close. Other people would know more than me though.

Thanks guys, appreciate the input. Long as there's not much of a difference between a Monash and a Melbourne actuary on the resume!

Mate, if you can graduate actuarial science with exemptions - it wouldnt matter which uni you went to. Youll have offers lining up.
