How do you rate macbook airs guys? I'm thinking of getting one, and my parents offered to get it for me as a gift for finishing year 12 (they told me throughout the year that if I got a good ATAR, I could get a MacBook lol). But I don't want it to be a waste of $1000+ if there are other brand laptops that are cheaper but as good/better

I bought one on Sunday and I absolutely love it! To me, having a lightweight lappy was more important than a CD Drive, so that's the main reason I chose the Air. Saying that though, the new Pro's don't have CD drives either but they're much more expensive so the Air is a good choice. If you can afford it, I'd go the 13 inch Air instead of the 11 inch as it doesn't weigh much more, the keypad is a little more spread out and it is easier to see things on screen.

Exactly. I can't believe how people use it's lack of a CD drive as against it. Who uses CD drives these days anyway? It's light weight, and wonderful display, make up for that any day.

Do you guys think the MacBook Pro with 15'' retina display is a overkill? Or should I go for a cheaper laptop? I absolutely hate windows by the way and I've never used OS X before. Thoughts?

I decided to go with a 13" air because it's more portable. I'm also doing sciency stuff and am doing the equivalent of honors this upcoming year, meaning a lot of research (and my research is computational/theoretical, which means a lot of computers). The MacBook Pro would have been overkill for me because I didn't really need the screen, but if you do graphics for fun or anything else that uses it, you might find it useful.

If you've got the money, go for it. I think 13" is decent enough, although as said, if you can afford it, why not :)

OSX is simple and efficient, easy to use from the first click. Would recommend it 100/100 times.

If you aren't doing anything hardcore with it like gaming or video editing (and even if you are I'd still rethink that decision) then it's definitely overkill. The 11" air is best if you're doing straightforward stuff and carrying it around a lot

You have to conced that sometimes you do need a CD drive. In fact at times lack of a CD drive has been a minor nuisance for me-mainly when I lose my external drive. CD drives would be well and truely phased out in a few years though (hopefully).

I'm using the Air for school, and it's been pretty smooth. I haven't had any problems, and it's not a hassle to carry it around (it's pretty light). I actually might consider buying it at the end of the year for uni next year.
