Summer:
Finance 1

Sem 1 :
Intermediate Microeconomics
Introductory Econometrics
Organisational behaviour
Management decision analysis

Sem 2 :
Intermediate Macroeconomics
Business Finance
Competition & Strategy
Management consulting /Human rights & global justice / Some random subject . . .
Mayt I'm doing Finance too! HOW GOOD IS IT. Also we can study together

To the person that asked for an easy Comm subject I suggest Principles of Marketing. I am planning on going in the marketing field because I loved the subject sooooo much. You listen in lectures and write notes, write well and can analyse language...you are good. Also the final exams essays need literally no structure so I just wrote bullet points and pictures and arrows...it was like a giant brainstorm!

Also. Why is Reactions if Synthesis worse than Chem 2? And has anyone actually done well in the sub? I'm planning on doing a Chem major...:/
Melbourne University-Science-Second year

Am taking in students for CHEMISTRY and MATHS METHODS tuition for 2014 as well as first year chemistry. If interested, pm me. Flexible with location.

Idk if this will influence your decision but without second year lab work you can kiss your hopes of a UROP placement goodbye...if that's something you're wanting to do.

I thought Anatomy was a lab subject...?  I don't know these things... simpak what defines a lab subject?  I need to heed that advice too...

Also can someone explain what DASC means please please?

A subject where you have to learn how to use a lab bench etc. as part of the prac. Doesn't happen in anatomy because all you do there is go into the anatomy lab and look at prosections/cadavers, there's not any actual investigation or similar.

Thanks Russ and Levi. Russ, is there a way to tell which subjects are lab subjects from the handbook, or do they all just say 'prac'? And were, for example, 1st year Biology (BIOL10004/5), lab subjects?

It's not really a formal thing as far as I know, it's just a commonly used term. Eg 'techniques in X' is a lab subject because they make you learn about the lab and use it, but I don't think it has anything unique on the handbook

Biology in first year probably won't be included because you don't really learn how to use the techniques/equipment you would in a UROP placement (not that you often would in a second year lab subject it just seems better)...I only did one in second year and I was 'okay' but people with more lab experience/more prac subjects on their transcript were definitely ahead of me since I essentially got a 'second round' offer.  They value it very highly!

Do you have any in your study plan for 2014 at the moment hobbitle?

Ehhh... trying to do an 'engineering' major whilst trying to get lab experience and having to max out Level 1 subjects because I had no science prerequisites is making my study plan organisation hell.  Add to that the mistake of not taking a Chemistry stream in first year and I'm basically a full year behind.

If anybody feels like taking a look and offering suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it.  I've decided to drop Physiology and Anatomy even though I'd LOVE to take them and they keep the MD open, but I just can't fit everything in.  This study plan excludes 4 breadths as I already have advanced standing for them.

Spoiler
2013
First Year, Semester 1

L1: Biology of Cells & Organisms
L1: Calculus 1

First Year, Semester 2
L1: Linear Algebra
L1:Calculus 2
L1: Genetics & Evolution of Life
L1: ESD 2

2014
Second Year, Semester 1

L1: Fundamentals of Chemistry
L2: Engineering Computation (compulsory for major)
L2: Engineering Mathematics (compulsory for major)

Second Year, Semester 2
L1: Chemistry 2 (hopefully accellerated...)
L2: Engineering Mechanics (not compulsory for major, but a useful Engineering subject)
L3: Biocellular Systems Engineering (CORE)

2015
Third Year, Semester 1

L2: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (finally.... urgh)
L3: Molecular Aspects of Cell Biology (not core, but I love the content)
L3: Introduction to Biomechanics (CORE)
L3: Fundamentals of Biosignals (CORE)

Third Year, Semester 2
L3: Stem Cells in Development & Regeneration (not core, again just interested)
L3: Biosystems Design (CORE)
L2: Pathology - Exploring Human Disease (for interests sake)
L2/L3: Slot open for whatever....

It was a poor, poor decision to end up behind in Chemistry but when I started the course I was just going to do the prerequisites for the Masters and transfer straight in to it.  Then I changed my mind and wanted to do the whole Undergraduate but by that stage it was too late to pick up Fundamentals of Chemistry.

Subjects that can perhaps swapped for something else are Engineering Mechanics, Pathology, anything 'not core', and there's obviously that open L2/L3 slot.  It's all well and good as a study plan but basically kills any chance I have of applying for UROP as all those heavier lab-type subjects are coming up too late in my degree.

I'll be doing HR&GJ, so excited for it. Comp and Strat is really tempting too...
Game theory ftw! Yea the HR subject seems pretty cool too, might see you in it if management rejects me haha

Ikr, I think I'm gna major in it. And cool a study buddy :D

hobbitle I think you could still be okay for placement considering your interest is in biomedical engineering and that's a little different to many of the other people that are more interested in classical life sciences majors like cell biology, neuroscience, immunology, etc.  Your study plan looks majorly full to me so if you are asked why you're not taking lab subjects you can just explain that you don't have room for that with your engineering prereqs and I feel like that's a legit excuse.  It is a bit different for someone who does a life sciences major but avoids pracs...

But yeah I think it's okay!  Don't give up hope - biomedical engineering is kind of a different BALL GAME in UROP because it kind of lumps in with those 'we don't take many of these students into our program' category with maths and physics.

There are a couple reviews about it in the Subject Review thread.

Thanks simpak for your super kind and encouraging words :-) I will definitely still apply all three times I can for UROP - it's all I can do! x

I love game theory. Took a workshop on it while in high school which is what motivated me to study economics at university.
