Me! I'm doing Studio Arts this year.  :D
I'm kind of freaked out with this subject in particular, to be honest...

How come you're freaked out?
I'm personally a bit intimidated by the amount of work you must consistently do throughout the year... otherwise you end up with a mediocre folio which means a mediocre study score that scales down by a fair bit! There's no such thing as leaving everything the night before and ending up with a great folio. And I tend to procrastinate...
I know that last year I ignored studio arts for my other subjects, won't allow myself to do that this year haha

I've seen paintings from someone in my class that are pretty much universally deemed as great (and I mean WOW :o great ) but still didn't get full marks because their evaluation is relatively weak.
I personally think the most important part in this subject is the evaluation bit because even if you produce 'questionable' art you can make up for it with reasons, and it also helps balance out the subjectivity of the subject.

The above are just my opinions. I hope it helps haha.
Goodluck with studio this year it's definitely one of the best subjects I've undertaken  :)

My biggest advice ever is to LET YOURSELF HAVE AT LEAST A WEEK TO DO THE EVALUATION (or if you want, evaluate after completion of each artwork)!!!! A lot of people crammed and that definitely affected them.

The exam was fairly easy last year and so were the ones from the previous years. You can easily score a high mark on it. You don't need to prepare for it early in the year at all so don't worry.  ;)

But anyways I can tell you that to do well at the exams you just need to look through outcome 3 (their main dot points on the study design) for both unit 3 and 4 and ensure you know it. Other than that research on two artist and two artworks from each of them. Your teacher will tell you what you need to know of from their artworks (historical/social context of artist, styles (like Impressionism or contemporary), the date, medium and meanings behind the artworks etc).

As for your exploration proposal I recommend checking out the criteria sheet for it on VCAA's website as that is exactly what your teacher is going to mark your EP and evaluation against.  It is also quite vital to constantly refer to your initial ideas in the EP and answer whether you've fulfilled them or not and if you've enhanced them in your evaluation and the REASONS for that. There is one special category there on the criteria sheet about mediums so don't forget to discuss about that too.

The criteria sheet seems pretty vague and scattered so I suggest highlighting out the main bits and then tackle them in your EP and evaluation.

I'm freaked out because I don't have my theme set in stone yet, and because of the big dedication towards the subject! Last year, I think I did pretty well in Studio Arts, mainly because I had help from my teachers. Do you think you have to be more independent in year 12 for Studio?

Our teacher last year didn't pay as much attention to year 11s, our class was a combination of year 11s and 12s because of such a small amount of people doing the subject. I'm sure teachers will be even more willing to help out and support in year 12 because they want us to do well.
I'm not really sure about my theme as well, I feel like it's too broad but I'll figure something out!

Isn't it a good thing that your theme is broad? I mean, that gives more space for more ideas.

Really? Teacher last year said we shouldn't have broad themes but a more specific one where you can just focus on that and expand ideas from that, because with broader themes, you may lose track of the main focus and whatnot. I do prefer to do a more broad theme though.

Haha, omg. My teacher said the opposite - The broader the theme, the better. I don't know. As long as we have our themes I guess everything's alright.
