Getting into Medicine through Biomedicine

Hey Guys, i have been thinking about this for a while and was looking for some answers.

I am currently in Year 11 this year and will graduate next year. My question is - How can i get into medicine (MD/MBBS) from biomedicine. i know about UMAT and if that fails i will try to get into biomed at melb or monash. I also know about GAMSAT but im not aware of what GPA etc is needed.

So kinda like, if i did biomed at UoM what do i need to do to get into medicine, same goes for monash. How does my ATAR play a role into affecting whether you do GAMSAT or not?

Also can someone also shed some light on how both Monash and UoM differ in terms of their selection process into MD/MBBS? is it CPS bonded?

Sorry for rambling on and my terrible english :P

Melbourne University does not select students on the basis of UMAT results, so the UMAT is not necessary to get into Biomed at Melbourne (apologies if you are already aware of this). If you get an ATAR of 99.90+, you will be guaranteed a place in the Chancellor's Scholars' Program. A few days after the release of the VCE results, you will be invited to sit an interview called the MMI. If you pass this interview, you will be guaranteed a place in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) course at postgrad level; you will not need to sit the GAMSAT at all. If you do not get an ATAR of 99.90+, you can still get into the MD course, however, you will have to sit and do well in both the GAMSAT and the MMI (which will be held in your final year of undergraduate study). You will also have to maintain a fairly high GPA. It is possible to get into the MD course via any undergraduate course (you do not have to study Biomed); you just need to make sure that you complete all the prerequisite subjects. For more information, see: http://medicine.unimelb.edu.au/study-here/md/selection_criteria.

If you do Biomedicine, you automatically fulfill all the prerequisites needed for the MD at Melbourne.

From what I recall, having a GAMSAT in the high 60s (+~86th percentile) and a GPA of around 6.6 out of 7 should be competitive for an interview offer at Melbourne. Then whether you get a CSP, bonded, or FFP depends on the Multi-Mini Interview. To get a GPA of 6.6 you need to consistently get around 75-80+ for your subjects. I think the Monash GPA requirement is only a hurdle (you need a GPA of 5 for Monash), and Monash doesn't have prerequisites for their graduate medicine course. The GAMSAT cut-offs for Monash are approximately the same.

Also, Monash is implementing a policy where 50/75 spots in their graduate MBBS course will be given to Monash Biomed students.
2012 ATAR: 99.20
2013-2015: Bachelor of Biomedicine (Microbiology/Immunology: Infections and Immunity) at The University of Melbourne
2016-2019: Doctor of Medicine (MD4) at The University of Melbourne

So just clarifying, correct me if i am wrong -
- No UMAT for Biomed @ UoM
- If i get 99.9 i just need to do a MMI which will give me a place in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) course at postgrad level.
- If i do not get 99.9 i need to sit the GAMSAT and MMI.

Just a few questions -
- What is the lowest star that they will accept for me to get into MBBS, say i did the UMAT and i got 95 atar (pretty sure around 93+ percentile is what they need) what kind of percentile will i need? (if you have 2 students, 1 got 96 atar and 97th and other got 99 atar and 94th, who will get the spot)
- Also i am a Kwong Lee Dow Scholor recipient, how does this effect the outcome of me getting into BioMed/MD.

Cheers

I have been reading about the MMI and its a series of i think 8 mini interviews. Exactly how do they do this and what are the main features they look for (i know - best for the degree, best qualities etc) but how do you show this through the interview, just saying it plainly would seem bait obnoxious (sorry if its the wrong word)

I'm not an expert but most MBBS kids I know got ATARS of 99+ so that's what you should be aiming for. Being a Kwong Lee Dow recipient lowers the ATAR requirement for Biomed @ UoM to 95 (but there is a limited quota).

A bit of this is covered in the medicine FAQ, which I just reformatted to make it easier to read (the grad stuff was formerly buried at the bottom).

Have a read - Medicine FAQ / So You Want To Be A Doctor

Thanks, but it still didn't answer me question :(

Is the only way to do MBBS at Monash through UMAT?

What happens if i do biomed and sit the GAMSAT and don't achieve it, what happens after that?

You can't apply for MBBS at Monash unless you have sat the UMAT. However, you can still get into MBBS at Monash without a very high UMAT score, provided that your ATAR is high enough.

Most Biomed students sit the GAMSAT twice: once in second year, and once in third year. If you are unlucky enough to fail on both occasions, then unfortunately you would have to wait another year. The people in charge of the MD course will not admit you, until such time as you pass the GAMSAT.

If i keep on failing, and the years continue, what new cone ten do i learn? and what alternative as i faced with? can a high GPA throughout my course substitute for a dismal GAMSAT score?

Unfortunately not, or at least not to my knowledge. You won't be learning any new content, because the material that you will be tested on will remain unchanged. But, unfortunately, you must pass the GAMSAT before you can be admitted into the MD course.

I think the sticky did cover this in at least some detail but just to clarify, the GAMSAT isn't a pass/fail exam, it's the same as the UMAT where you get a mark on a continuum and you're compared against the marks (and GPAs) of others

Melbourne Uni places equal importance on GPA and your GAMSAT score. They both contribute 33.3% each when you apply. So if you have a high GPA, you can compensate by having a lower GAMSAT (but it still has to be rather high), and the same applies vice versa.

So no UMAT for Biomed @UoM, what about Monash Biomed? Do we need UMAT for that?
