Changing a unit
« on: January 20, 2014, 10:54:28 am »

So I picked all my 8 units for this year, but one is a marketing unit that I out in simply because I couldn't find anything else I was interested in. Now I've found something for second semester, to replace it with, but can I change it?

Also the unit itself along with another are compulsory "gateway units". Can I complete the second semester one first and the first semester one later? Thanks

You should be able to change units for the second semester up until the census date for it which would end up being until the end of the second semester. In terms of units, nothing is really concrete until the census date of the semester of completion. You just go to WES and change your enrolment and making sure you discontinue the one you want to get rid of, and adding the one you want and clicking submit! It'll show up amended on your my.monash a few days later

In re-enrollment for my 3rd year, I only put down 3 units for semester two, coz I plan on figuring out what units I want to do later on, probably after Sem 1 ones.

You'll need to be more specific with your last query about the gateway units though, coz its all this gateway stuff is new, and some of us oldies may not understand unless you be specific. What course are you doing, and what units are you looking at?

I'm doing bachelor of business(management)/bachelor of business(marketing) but the elective I'm looking at is ats1873-intro to international relations. However this is in second semester but the first unit is ats1353- intro to politics. Can I enrol in ats1873 but do ats1353 next year first semester?

OOOO good choice, I've heard good things about those two units! Yuuup you sure can, they arent prerequisites of each other. You could potentially just take ats1873 on its own without any problem in Sem 2, without doing its semester 1 equivalent.

Are you wanting to get an IR major or minor?

Looking at doing a double minor in criminology and politics. I  to do something to support my marketing or even a leadership potential type minor but I hate quantitative subjects with a passion and Caulfield is extremely limited on areas of study

Actually international relations looks heaps better than politics!

Yes, you can change your subjects for plenty of time to come. I put in random subjects (kinda) for my first semester, i plan on changing these later on (you really do have up until a week or two in semester, you wont get preferential time slots but you can still change your mind).

As for gateway thats all new (and a shitty move on behalf of the university i think). You're only bound to follow the handbook for the year you're enrolled in to the best of my knowledge. You can find archived/old handbooks on the website. I don't think the whole gateway scheme was operating in 2013 (i assume thats when you started), so, i dont believe you have to follow it. That's not legit advice though, contact the administration to make sure.

Failing that, you can be so dodgy it isn;t funny. I doing my 1st year math unit... this year, my 4th year (i dropped my subject load down for a bit). Long as you have all the requirements stated when you finally graduate and they assess it all you're fine. You dont need to necessarily do it in a temporal sequence (although it may be a very good idea if its prerequisite knowledge and they might make you do it in the order they say).
