Haven't tried it on a desktop client, I have my primary gmail account checking it, but since it's just a Google Apps account, you should be able to add it as a gmail account
Yes you are correct - just managed to get it working through Thunderbird and discovered where my problem lies.
Thunderbird will try and auto-detect the mail server host name but will fail for non-standard addresses such as @student.monash.edu. You'll have to manually enter the the IMAP server hostname (which is just the Googlemail server).
The problem is there is a bug (?) with Thunderbird when going through manual setup (documented here:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=812750). Setting it up through the 'advanced config' option gets around this.
So for people trying to forward their Monash student mail to Thunderbird, the steps are:
1. In your Student Email settings enable IMAP (in POP3/IMAP settings tab)
2. Go through the automatic configuration process for adding an email account in Thunderbird.
3. When it fails, select the 'advanced-config' button
4. Set it up again in the 'advanced-config' window (use 'imap.googlemail.com' as the server name and 993 as port).
For Outlook, follow the same procedure for enabling IMAP in your student email settings. Using the automatic setup in outlook won't work - you have to go through manual setup and use the above server address (imap.googlemail.com) and port (993). You have to click 'more settings' to change the default port settings.
