How do you discipline yourself to avoid procrastinating?

I have a really hard time getting my assignments, etc. done without getting distracted. I've tried making study schedules, disabling electronics and going to a quiet room.
Never works :( In the end, I realise how much time I wasted and get demotivated.. (like now)

Do any of you have any tricks or tips on how to get tasks done and studying productively? With so many distractions, I complete a 20min task in 2 hours (literally)..

Any feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I'm getting the impression that AN, despite its awesomeness, is somewhat of a distraction? Well, it happens to me occasionally :)

Remind yourself of what would happen if you couldn't complete the task. That's my strategy

Create a goal. Study for 45 minutes then take a 15 minute break (This is the advisable amount of time). Tell yourself that you are NOT ALLOWED to enjoy yourself (go on facebook etc) until you've completed the 45 minutes of work. That way you'll have something to look forward to! I would also use a timer in order to make sure that you don't go over the limit.

My personal motivation is the feeling of getting into the course I want, or simply the day of receiving your ATAR score. You don't want to be all depressed and think "I could have done better", cause that'll suck.  Remember why you're in VCE and why you want to finish the assignments. Just keep reminding yourself that what you do now will affect your future. Always have that goal in mind. I know how difficult it is to stop procrastinating but as long as you are motivated and think about the future, you will be okay. A bit of procrastination is fine, just make sure it doesn't hinder your results cause then you'll feel bad. So yeah just keep that in mind. I'm sure you'll do fine!^_^

Worth the read. Though taking the time to read it would probably be classed as procrastination.  ;D

Hey nerdmmb! I had the same problems as you around last year-ish but I managed to overcome it with a few things!

So I changed from studying in a room and moved outside to my living room. Sure it's strange studying in the living room but it's an open space area and the desk I got to use was bigger than before too (sometimes my table is a bit messy so I take my work and study on the kitchen table and I'm pretty motivated there LOL)

I also stick my goals for the year in my room and wherever I'm studying so I can see it ad be reminded why I am studying! It's a long journey and being reminded of it certainly helps (for me).
As for procrastination... well I've substituted it for other stuff so if I see myself slacking off then I get up, go get a drink of water or a snack and come back. Sometimes I go for a run (whether it be in the afternoon or at midnight [highway runs are pretty good if you're up for it LOL]) but yeah whenever I feel like I'm procrastinating I just get off my chair really.

Oh and I deleted my social networking sites off my mobile devices so if a notification came up on FB then I wouldn't be inclined to view it (sure I could turn off the alerts and stuff but I feel more secure deleting it I guess...)

But yeah procrastination is fine but just don't do it too often I guess!

I'm getting the impression that AN, despite its awesomeness, is somewhat of a distraction? Well, it happens to me occasionally :)

You can customise your profile to exclude certain boards when you're viewing the forum I believe (if that helps).

I always kept myself busy. I had allocated times for doing nothing - (allocated times to procrastinate). So that I would stay focused for longer. I found if you have a variety of things you need to do, for example: sport, school, work or chores it's easier to stay more focused in short bursts. Remember it's not the hours that you study it's the quality of your study.

It's different for everyone, you need to find what works for you.
Sometimes (during exam time for example) I'll disable Facebook for a while.  I find that if I delete the app off my phone, even though you can just log in and reactivate it, I just don't think about it much.
I also discovered that I was unable to study in a house or home environment so I always go in to uni to study.  I don't know if that works for you (I assume you're still in school)... but I had to remove myself from a place that had a TV, bed (I'd always migrate to working on my bed and then fall asleep), etc.
Timing is also a good one - 45 minutes on, 15 minute 'reward' of doing whatever.

Thank-you everyone! :)

I think the 45min study + 15min break really worked for me today :)
