Script Inspection/ Re-marking of exam

Hi all,

Last year i undertook Legal Studies 3/4 and achieved a study score of 38. Initially i was disappointed with this study score as i walked out of the exam room feeling really good about myself and had scored well in my SACs (Also went through the trouble of ordering the Statement of marks).

But after Christmas, New Years and going overseas, i completely forgot about the 38, just moved on and thought to myself, 'this is still actually a really good score'. (I imagine this will be the same feeling after i get my ATAR this year). I had not given any thought about my score until today, where my legal studies teacher from last year had a chat with me asking whether i was happy with my score or not and whether or not i wanted to have an inspection of scripts. She thought i would score higher and also said that it would be a great learning experience just to see where i went wrong.

So i have a few questions:

1. If i do end up having an inspection of my exam, will there be a time limit on how long i have a look at it?
2. In the inspection, will my teacher be allowed to mark my exam to see how she would have marked it?
3. If i do ask for a re-mark of my exam, what is the process in doing so? (I feel like it would be such long and draggy process in which noone wants to do)
4. After a re-mark, could i possibly end up with a lower score or would they stick with my original score prior to the re-mark?
5. Is a re-mark even worth the time and anxiety? What's the likelihood of my study score being increased? I don't want to re-experience how i felt the days coming up to Dec 17.

If anyone has previously inspected their exam or has any words of wisdom, that would be great and i would appreciate it. Thanks everyone. :):)

I haven't, nor am I considering to inspect my exam script. But I do know a fair bit about the rules about it.

You are allowed to inspect your script for 15 minutes only. Your teacher is allowed to enter the inspection with you.

VCAA only remarks the exam if there is an objective error. If your subject teacher feels that a re-mark is justified he, along with your school principal, has to sign a permission form sent to VCAA for them to re-mark.

With a subject like Legal Studies, there is so much subjectivity that you can argue almost anything within the course is subjective not objective. Unlike a subject like Maths or Accounting. I mean I lost 1 mark for an "identify three errors" question. Ie. someone gave me full marks and the other took 1 mark off... I don't see how you can lose marks on an identify question if it is genuinely correct... (I am only using this example to illustrate how subjective Legal is)

I don't see any reason why marks can't go down. I mean a remark is a remark. It's not an opportunity for you to get more marks.

38 is a great score, especially with the Legal exam being so competitive this year. So I wouldn't ask for an inspection unless you actually see a need to do so.

How do you know you can only inspect the script for 15 minutes? I can't find it anywhere on the VCAA website or the application form.

Also, thank you for the clarifications. :)

As far as I know, no 15 minute rule exists. You can look at the script as long as you want provided it's one sitting and the exam is not copied etc.

Think the principal and subject teacher (or suitable replacment) have to be there also.

I think a good place to start is to look at the statement of marks to see if there is strange or suss marking (perhaps compare the marks to the paper available on the VCAA site). If it look suss than order a inspection. (my opinion)
