Transferring from melbourne to monash

Hi all.
I know it's only 3 weeks in to the semester but I can already say that I hate Melbourne Uni.
Should I withdraw from bachelor of science now and transfer to Monash bachelor of enviro engineering&arts next semester or complete semester 1 first?
Cheers

Hey,

I'm sorry that you feel that way. :(
I think the only option for a transfer is to complete the first semester and see if mid year transfer is a viable option (if they offer it? If so, whether your uni average is good enough). If not, you may need to wait til the end of the year for the transfer.

Chuck a PM if interested :)

Available for tutoring on the summer holidays for university subjects or VCe.
Also tutoring for the Melbourne uni MMIs (medical/physiotherapy interviews)

Please don't PM me for lecture slides or recordings. I don't have them anymore.

What is it exactly that you dislike about UoM? Do you feel the degree does not suit you or is it something specific about the uni itself that will certainly change if you move?

Also I believe transfers to Engineering double degrees are only available at the end of the year, unless this only applies to internal transfers.

Keep in mind that the grass may not be greener on the other side.

What you hate about UoM might also be true of Monash.

As FyreFly said, you need to analyse *why* you hate UoM. Figure out whether it really is only institutionally specific (Don't like the structure at all, 3 hours away from home, dont offer any of the subjects you desire). Then analyse whether this will actually improve at Monash (closer to home, better structure, etc).

If it's something vague like you don't find the people very nice or something like that, there's no guarantee you'll find it subjectively better at Monash. You can only transfer into *any* degree after completing a semester.

You have two options:

(1) Stay on at Melbourne, use your melbourne uni grades as part of your selection into Monash
(2) Go on intermission and don't do any uni for a semester/year (depending when the transfer intake opens). This will only use your ATAR score.

There is little overlap between the degrees so im no]t sure if you'd be able to get any of your science subjects credited, so, you'd be essentially doing them for the heck of it. They wouldn't count towards your Monash degree (say if you were going from science at UoM to science at Monash, they obviously would count, but the degrees you are going into are fairly different).

(1) is usually the recommend option due to boredem/credit concerns. However, since it seems unlikely (contact them to be sure) that you'll get any subjects credited, there isn't as much of a point to do them if you hate it. If this is the case, perhaps go on intermission and work for awhile until you can transfer into Monash. Others may offer other opinions.

As always, triple check all these things for yourself, the repercussions can be fairly serious if we're (accidentally) wrong.  Check these things with the universities to be certain (really, contact Monash ASAP for advice).

If you want to do environmental engineering later on a Bioengineering Systems, Chemical Systems, Civil Systems, Computing and Software Systems, Electrical Systems, Geomatics, Mechanical Systems major will allow you to gain entry to an environmental engineering masters if you passed the minimum average GPA.
You can do breadths in arts too.

At Monash they don't need a masters to qualify the students as engineers though, it's just a bachelor plus honours.

Both pathways are 5 years.

So you can do the same thing at Monash at UoM except you'll probably do less arts units.

Another thing to note is that something like a chemical engineering or civil engineering graduate (possibly even more types of engineering) does let someone do environmental engineering, while I'm not too sure if it can work the other way around.

(yeah, as you can see I've did some research about this before aha :) )

If you plan to have an intermission you'll have to decide asap to get refunds for your fees.
