Fill in subject, first year science?
« on: April 02, 2014, 11:36:01 pm »

I'm already over this semester and thinking about the next....

I'm doing calc2 at the moment and I regret even thinking about choosing it "to keep my options open". No more maths for me plz.

Now I have a subject spot free on my timetable for next semester and I have no idea what to fill it in with. Any recommendations? Whats a chill and interesting subject?

Biology of Australian Flora & Fauna is really interesting, requires little logical thought and is well-coordinated and quite easy (and I have Dropbox-hosted online comprehensive notes I could send you).
Genetics & the Evolution of Life is a little harder but covers some really intriguing stuff about protists no other course at UoM will really teach you (sadly, protists are super-cool and everywhere :<), and genetics is really useful as a foundation for life sciences if you choose to go on with those.
Understanding Planet Earth opens up later-level geology subjects and has no exam component, and might help if you plan to major in a field biology or chemistry-type discipline, as well as physics-y type geomatics etc. From what I hear it's fairly easy and there's also an extended field trip.
From Solar System to the Cosmos is (according to my friend) an absolute joke if you have ever taken a science class beyond Year 9 and know how to do basic algebra.
I would suggest The Geography of Famine as another "keeping options open subject" even though it's apparently quite boring, but that only runs in Semester One :/
MBB2 is pretty manageable from what I hear as well? And the exam is all MCQ!
VCE: Chemistry | Biology (2011) | English (2011) | Environmental Science | Mathematical Methods CAS

2013-2015: BSc [Zoology] @ UoM | DLang [German - DISCONTINUED]
2016: GDSc [Botany] @ UoM
2017-2018: MSc [Biosciences - Zoology] @ UoM

Summer: BOTA30006

S1: BOTA20001 | EVSC20004 | BOTA30003 | BIOL90001

S2: GEOG20009 | BOTA30002 | BOTA30005 | EVSC20003 | NRMT90002

Subject and major reviews incoming :)

YES to Flora and Fauna if you like your plants and animals. It was super interesting and it was my favourite first year science subject
Fourth year Bachelor of Science student at unimelb, majoring in Zoology. I also run the Unimelb Adventures blog about student life on campus: http://unimelbadventures.com

Thanks. This is a great list of subjects!  and... what does mbb2 stand for?

YES to Flora and Fauna if you like your plants and animals. It was super interesting and it was my favourite first year science subject
Ill have a to look into this subject! you guys make it sounds so interesting but im not too sure whether or not ill enjoy it. im not a fan of learning about plants. if its anything like the plants section in biology, ill probably pass that one up.

Thanks for all the replies and recommendations guys!

The botany component of Flora/Fauna is nothing like what you would have done in highschool, and is much more interesting than the BIOL10004 content (though I didn't find that completely horrible either, to be honest). The first botany lecturer is wonderful, though the second is a little dull, but covers pretty easy stuff. If it helps reassure you, I went from utterly despising plants to adding two botany subjects into my degree :)
MBB2 -> Mind, Brain and Behaviour 2 (psychology subject).

you could always do one less level one subject and an extra level 2/3 subject that compliments your major.
