UMEP 7th Subject Credit
« on: April 10, 2014, 10:37:00 pm »

A teacher at my school said that even if you do 6 subjects, doing University Extension as a 7th will still count towards your ATAR. I haven't seen anything to support this claim. I believe this is untrue, but can anyone confirm this?
Thanks in advance  :)

Never heard of 7 subjects being used to calculate your ATAR before... it's always been 6 from memory.
Looking at the VTAC website (http://www.vtac.edu.au/results-offers/y12-atar.html#how) I can't find much about any 7th subject apart from this:

Quote
How is the ATAR calculated?
VTAC uses VCE results issued by VCAA (Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority) to calculate the ATAR.

Subject to the restrictions outlined in VICTER 2014 (available from the publications page), the ATAR is developed from an aggregate produced by adding:

VTAC Scaled Study Score in one of English, English Language, Literature or English as an Additional Language (EAL)
The next best three VTAC Scaled Study Scores permissible; and
10% of the fifth and sixth permissible scores that are available.

It's untrue. Having Uni extension as a 7th subject would give the select few who got into uni extension an unfair advantage, especially in the ultra-high ATAR brackets where a one or two points can bring you up a few ATAR scores.

It isn't, it was my mate's 7th subject and didn't count for him (he got 4.5 and the rest of his scores were much higher ;) )

The only bonus for him is that he gets to skip a semester of maths and get stuck into vector calc early :P

Thanks IndefatigableLover, chasej and Alwin.
I didn't think it was true, but it was good to confirm.  :)

EDIT: They changed it

Yes, it absolutely counts towards your ATAR on top of six subjects. It isn't worth much, but of course it counts. Otherwise there'd be no reason to do it.
Those saying it doesn't are wrong I'm afraid. It's normally only a small amount (and it has been made a tiny bit smaller), but it is roughly equivalent to one of your 10%ers

The UMEP mark is added on to your aggregate after your six have been calculated. From memory the highest you can get is 5.5 or 5 on aggregate (equivalent to 10% of 50).

So basically, it would count towards your ATAR if it ends up being greater than one of your bottom two subjects, with 5.0 being the highest.

Yep, that's it. I applied ages ago and then it was certainly an extra addition. I'm just not with the times anymore apparently.
