Welcome to philosophy! We need more philosophy students, there doesn't seem to be too many who take it. Good luck with your classics exam! :) I'm doing well in my classes, especially English. Could probably do with some work in maths though.

Philosophy is my saving grace among my science heavy schedule. Philosophy such a great subject - you're right, more people should do it.

On a similar note, I wanted to ask for some advice; I've always loved the humanities, and have recently given up most of my favourite humanities subjects for VCE. However, I was thinking of dropping physics and starting History: Revolutions units 3+4 next year, even though I have not studied it this year. Do you guys think that's a good idea? I am a bit iffy about studying 3 essay subjects next year, even though I'm quite strong at writing.

I reckon drop physics, but I love the humanities so of course I'll tell you that. But as for history, you definitely don't need 1/2 to do 3/4 (and if it's any consolation, I'm jumping into 3/4 without 1/2 as well). If you don't mind writing essays, then three essay subjects shouldn't be a problem. Also since you'll be writing them fairly often, you should be a pro by the end of the year :P And I'm doing four essay subjects next year, so you won't be the only one writing, writing, and writing!

Depends on your workload, history is really rewarding..it can really pay off.

1) There is tons to memorize and remember. And there is usually way more to the revolutions that everyone knows. Some kid will always know more than you in a certain area and you will know more than him a certain area. It is impossible to know everything that happened.

2) It is very rewarding. The exam is worth 40 marks for each revolution. Thus a total of 80. To get into the top 10% of the state you need about 60/80 or 30/40 in each revolution.

3) That being said, the chances that you will get a nice question is very difficult.
For example in each part of each revolution there is something called a 'source analysis' in which you analyse a source and comment on 'different views of the source'. What does that mean?

-You will get a random cartoon/image from an area of study of revolution.
-You need to come up with 3 historian quotes on that single event. Its important to note that you can only get around 40% on the question if u dont talk about them. Which means you need to remember what 3 random dudes say for nearly everything that happened in the spam of 2 revolutions.

Im not kidding, revolutions is grueling and tough. However it is very rewarding. Remember you only need around 78% in the exam to get around a 39-41. Its best to do it as a year 11 subject with little pressure from other year 12 subjects. But it is doable, im doing it this year and loving it :). Therefore, if you can make time for it, around 1-2 hours per day for this subject only, you can score very well.

Edit. Im also doing 2 english subjects

So with me, right, I'm definitely into medicine and science and I'm hoping to get into med at uni. BUT, I'm also really interested in learning about history and other humanities related things, just for the fun of it.

I'm not extremely passionate about it, and I'm not looking for a career in it in the future, and I don't do any humanities subjects at all, so am I, like, completely unfit to go to this forum? It interests me, but I feel like a poser of sorts going to something like that.

Also, does anyone know any medical/science related programs/lectures/anything coming up preferably in the holidays? Is it just me or is there a complete lack of these in Melbourne?

What are you looking for exactly? Many hospitals/unis run public lectures on various topics, but if you're looking for something that may give you insight into a particular career then you're going to be out of luck :P Best to organise extra work experience or go to career expos if you want something like that.

Do you have any recommendations for these lectures? Any particular good ones...just anything relating to science and health and medicine specifically. And how do I organise extra work experience?

An example would be something like this which gets updated as future events are planned http://monash.edu/news/events/category/medicine-nursing-health-sci and https://events.unimelb.edu.au/all/free-public-lecture/hosted_by/11-faculty-of-medicine-dentistry-and-health-sciences. To be honest, I'm not sure how interesting they'll really be, many are aimed at people who have a specific interest in the topic (ie. patients with the condition for their own education). But I'll leave it up to you to judge given I've never bothered to attend them hahaha. I'm sure if you google other unis and other hospitals you'll come up with other public lectures (not just for medicine, but for a whole heap of science-y things).

As for work experience, I'd really just suggest contacting people. Contact hospitals (they'll more than likely direct you to websites), contact GPs, contact any other doctors you know, make friends with classmates who have doctors in the family and drop mad hints that you want to spend a week with them, etc. I personally didn't do any of this after my "normal" work experience at the RCH, but I know people who did and the enjoyed it.

Additionally, if you have a bit of spare cash handy, this may be appealing http://www.gapmedics.com.au/

Yes! I'm going on a gap medics placement in December of this year in Africa! They look amazing and from what I've heard from past students you get some crazy opportunities e.g scrubbing into surgery!
Don't worry about scores that you can't change  because there are so many more productive things you could do
