The reality of it all has hit me now...somehow I have to work as hard as I did last year multiplied by 5...

That would be true if you only did one subject last year, but it's likely you did 6 (yeah, subjects don't have to be unit 3/4!). And I wouldn't believe anyone here for a moment if they told me they did zero study for their unit 1/2 subjects, everyone here is far too nerdy to do that :P

You'll have to work harder, but not that much harder. And it'll all be over before you know it ;)

Seconded, pi adopt us all  :D

I'm really starting to worry, there's so much I wanted to do before year 12 starts and I feel like I'm going into this year thinking it's all about study; but I want to make memories too! Anyone have advice on managing time/what to sacrifice or not sacrifice in year 12? Cheers fam xx

Contrary to what lots of people say, year 12 is pretty cruisy in my opinion (well, until you reach the exam period).

Looking back on it, year 12 wasn't that much of a big deal as there was plenty of time to do stuff besides study. Don't stress, that would be my advice.

Yeah wholeheartedly agree with this point. It all depends on your aim, for example, I didn't work very hard til the last 3 months or so (til i realised that i really needed to), but then again, I didn't end up with Chancellors (which was my end goal).

However, I did still end up with an ATAR that a lot of people would be happy with (99+ ATAR) but it was (i felt) below my potential.

Omg really? I'm definitely working on the stress, my main goal this year is to stay on top of things and not fall behind, if not stay ahead, so I will be more comfortable and prepared for sacs/exams. Did you ever fall behind? In my experience, that's what stresses me out heaps, but I never worked much last year. So if you didn't, were you less stressed? Will that give me more time and freedom to live my normal life with friends and extra curriculars?

Well as I've mentioned in other threads, my strategy for year 12 was unconventional - I basically only studied for the subject that I had a SAC on that week. Ofcourse, keep up to date with classwork and everything, but if you have a chem sac one week I wouldn't bother doing extra physics work even if you think you're 'falling behind'.

I think a trap lots of people fall into (this might include you) is that they think "ok if I don't do x hours of work each day/week for each subject then I'm falling behind". There is NO SET AMOUNT that you must do. Don't pick an arbitrary number and say "alright I've gotta do 3 hours of Spesh tonight even though I have a methods SAC in 2 days or else I'll fall behind in spesh." Just ignore that other subject.

I did my above method so much during last year, that over a period of time I literally did zero physics homework for two whole months because of the distribution of SACs. And no, that's not an exaggeration. There was 2 months between physics SACs for some reason, so I didn't bother to do any work for them but still got A+'s.

So with this strategy I had good success in the year and had PLENTY of time to go out after school/weekends and waste on video games, because I only spent time studying for stuff that was absolutely necessary.

Edit: And please don't misconstrue this as me saying "oh I'm smart so I don't need to study". There are so many brilliant people on AN who achieved more than me, but I put my relative success down to studying smart and prioritising what is important.

Hello everyone

Sorry if this has been answered already but having only scored a 39 in biology this year after working extremely hard, I'm a bit worried that I'll be much more overwhelmed for next year. Is anyone else feeling like this. Thanks

I feel nervous abot this too. Although i didn't try my absolute hardest , i scored in the mid 30's for legal studies, which obviously made me worried and paranoid about year 12 ! I think the best way to think about your score is:
1) did you try your hardest? If yes , move on to the next point. If not , then go out there anf smash it !!!
2) did you work SMART and EFFICIENCTLY ? If yes, next point!!! If not , try see where you went wrong and continue to sek advice and work hard but focus on working smart moreso
3) if you've done both, maybe it was exam stress/another personal factor that stopped you reaching your goal/personal satisfaction? Try work out that out before next year!

If you've ticked yes to all three , then as long as you tried your utmost best, you should be extremely proud of yourself! Studyscores and Atars cannot measure your kindness, passion, creativity , personality, work ethic and just about anything else that's not 'academic'. As long as your full effort is given day in and day out , im 99% sure youll be fine ! A 39 is still a crazy good score ! :)
