Deciding what units to do: ACC1000, MGC1010, MKC1200

Hey all,

I've already completed ECC1000 and ETC1000 in Semester 1 and I'm trying to decide what 2 units to do this semester.

I most likely want to major in accounting but wasn't able to do ACC1000 last semester because it didn't work with my timetable. I really regret it now because the times for this semester really suck - one of the lectures is an 8am one and considering the fact that I live in the west it's going to be a bit difficult for me to travel so early. I've also heard that it's better not to skip lectures for accounting because the lectures really help, especially since I didn't do accounting in VCE so I don't want to struggle.

The course map for Com/Law suggests doing MGC1010 and MKC1200 this semester so I'm considering that as an option. However, there are a few things holding me back:
- I'm not sure if it's a good idea to push off ACC1000 another semester if accounting is what I want to major in
- So many people say MGC1010 and MKC1200 combined are boring, or that it's better to 'save' one or both of the units for later years when a supposedly easier unit may make things easier later on
- I might have to skip a lecture for one of the units because the timing won't fit with my timetable

So I have a few questions:
- Is it a bad idea to push of ACC1000? Should I just do it this semester alongside MGC1010 or MKC1200? If I were to skip one of the two lectures, would I be at a loss? I really don't want to do badly in this unit
- Or, does it not really matter much? Could I just do MGC1010 and MKC1200 together this semester and ACC1000 sem1 next year?
- Are the lectures worth attending for both MGC1010 and MKC1200 or are tutes more useful? Would I be at a loss if I missed out on lectures for one of them? Which one's lectures are more worth missing out on? (I know missing out on lectures isn't a good idea to begin with but considering problems with distance, work, etc. this is probably my only option - or I could email the lecturers for these units and ask them if they'd record lectures)

What do you think I should do?

mgc1010 and mkc1200 are really simple. I did them together last year and yeah I probably wouldn't advise it to most people.

the mgc1010 exam is open book and is literally give a definition, and explain why it applies to situation xyz. Then during the sem there's an annotated bib and article review that is straight forward.

mkc1200 is similar in that it's just definitions of terms, and explaining certain processes, the assignment during the semester is fairly long (not hard), but I quite liked it since it was something different (you basically think of a product and explain how you would go about marketing it).

Anyway, my advice would be to prioritize your major, you don't want to be caught out down the track because you need a prerequisite that you haven't done yet. As you said, you could just leave mgc and mkc until your last 2 semesters to lighten your load to focus on your 3rd year stuff, provided they aren't pre-reqs for anything you want to do.

Did you find that attending lectures was important for both units or not?? I might do mgc1010 alongside acc1000 this semester, but it might mean missing out on the mgc1010 lectures

I'm not advocating this, but I didn't attend one lecture for either subject. Similar to your situation, it just wasn't convenient.

The notes are more than sufficient.

Hahha okay I'll attend when I need to but for the sake of convenience, probably won't most of the time. Is one unit better than the other (out of MKC1200 and MGC1010) to do alongside ACC1000?

doesn't really matter, they have nothing to do with each other.

just go for whatever fits best for you/whatever you prefer to do.

I wouldn't worry too much about what the Com/Law course map suggests - it's not always the best way of doing things, and in many ways is just a suggestion (I think mine suggested doing Property law and an elective in 2nd year before even doing Crim, which is no great idea).

First year management and marketing are a bit bland, although you can still do them alongside each other and push accounting back. Personally I got all my 1st year commerce units out of the way before I began my finance major, although some people staggered their units (e.g. pushed management off until 3rd year cause they really didn't want to deal with it). Either way works fine, I think. Which lectures are more worth missing? You could probably miss either; I'd rather go to Marketing as it's a bit more interesting and creative.

Save MGC1010 and MKC1200 - probably a must. I don't do law, but I have friends who have cried because law units are hard and 100% exams and as you know failure rates XD. So save MGC and MKC until your last years when you have like, a few 3rd year law units so you can cry / study less.

All the other ACC units have 1000 has a pre-requisite. However you could do BFC2140 which is a finance unit, but required for an accounting major. So you'll have to do it at some point. ACC1000 isn't a formal pre-requisite from memory. That being said, the 2 weeks of finance that you do in 1000 would help a little, but starting straight in BFC2140 wouldn't be too much of a leap. Lots of formulas and number plugging.

Is it hard? Keeping in mind I haven't done vce accounting. What's the workload like and is it more content heavy or number plugging?

Most people tend to find it pretty accessible, and not having done VCE accounting wouldn't matter much at all. Not a huge workload - your law units would still be much more time consuming I'd imagine. Is mostly number plugging, however from looking through the exams of the last few years there seems to be more of an emphasis on the theory. However number plugging is still a huge part of the unit, especially for the test.

Imo the maths/calculations in BFC2140 are actually a bit easier than first year stats

So it doesn't need knowledge from acc1000? Also, is it common for first years to even do the unit??
Will I be at a disadvantage being a first year who is doing it alongside acc1000? Also, does anyone know if lectures are recorded in semester 2?
