How to study effectively on public transport

I've been doing some thinking and I've realised I spend a ridiculous amount of time sittting around on the bus/train doing nothing (ie 1 hour 45mins on the bus each school day plus 1 hour 20mins on the train on Saturdays).

So I'm just wondering how I can best make use of this time. Any suggestions people?

The most productive uses of your time would probably be sleeping or reading. There will not be much hope of doing any written work. You should use the time to read over the material you covered at school (after school) and before school, you should read ahead so you know what to expect in class. This is easy to overlook but it hopes your memory absorption a lot!

If you are a night-person, or are relatively sleep deprived, small naps can be very beneficial, and the benefits to your concentration may be worth it.

I'm an expert on this, lol. I went to school everyday on public transport and to UMEP at least once a week. Public transport is a good place to read. Also, if you're tired, you can record your class notes beforehand and just listen to them on your ipod/mobile phone and rest. I agree that it's not the best place for writing. But as Coblin said even just reading over your textbooks or writing books can be a big help, you could also spend time re-reading your English texts. It also means that if you use the hour and 45 minutes wisely, you won't have to do all that much more study once you get home.

Flash cards. Seriously, I've never tried it, but I reckon that'd be the best time to whip 'em out. Try it and see if it works! Report back results.

But yeah, the most you could get on PT is to read your notes - or maybe discuss with friends if travelling with them (supposedly, retention is better when you have to express your knowledge).

I live essentially down two roads from uni - Wellington and Police Roads..

Though, I try and push my timetable back such that I go in the arvos - but no luck with doing that in summer sem!

Hey, just like me! (1 hr 30 mins to get to school and potentially uni)

I had a thing called podcrammers. Basically verbal summary notes. Worked for chem, not so for methods.

I could never read, too noisy. Best to sleep, but be careful you don't oversleep and miss your stop. That's happened to me before, although I only live one stop from the terminus, I still miss my stop.

Lol (I'm in the same position still no licence lol)I will probably be using public transport as well, problem is that i get dizzy and feel sick if i read in a moving vehicle maybe those podcast things will work for me instead lol... =)

That happens to me too but my Mum thinks that i should be okay on the train as long as I face forward. I guess I can only give it a go! I don't really take things in when I listen to things like podcasts and plus I would have to spend time making them which for me means I may as well just read the book outloud and sleep on the train!

I always get motion sickness in the car if I'm a passanger, but never on the train. The track is less windy and there is less random stop/starting.
