Hey guys!

Because i'm currently doing 2 3/4s in Year 11 (MM and CSL) and I'm not planning on repeating them (hopefully)
School requires us to select at least 5 subjects for Year 12 regardless of how many you did in Year 11

I've currently got Chem, Physics, Specialist and English booked for next year, but I've still got an empty slot!

I haven't done any extra 1/2s this year so any 3/4s I pick up will have to be from scratch.

My list of choices:
Accounting
Further
Psychology
Legal
Biology
University Chem
Uni Physics
Uni Maths

Typically I'm leaning towards a subject where I don't have to put too much effort (it is my 7th subject)
Could anyone give me some recommendations based on past experiences?
Thank you very much!

I'd lean towards Further and Legal, since you don't want to put in too much effort.

Also, have you considered HHD?

That said, every subject has its difficulties.
Further is increasingly harder each year... also, from what I remember, you can't have 3 maths subjects in your top 4 :P

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. :)

No you're right McFleurry you can't have 3 maths subjects in your Top 4 :)
And this is something to consider but depending on what you want to go into later on in uni, I'd suggest picking a uni extension subject!

Firstly you get credit for it for university and also your school offers it as well so there's the luxury of that as well (but you still need to do pracs at Monash Uni or UoM depending on what) but also the exam dates don't really 'align' as much so basically when your VCAA exams finish, you can study all you like for your extension subject (and there's no midyear as well so you can study all you want for midyear exam as well)!

Essentially there is still a lot of stress involved but you have lots of time to study for it and you get to meet new people along the way too!

If you finish MM 3/4 this year, then uni Math can be pretty fun to try :). I know the Melb Uni Math only accounts for half year credit whilst the Physics accounts for the whole year, so yeah, highly recommend it! Good luck.

Further or a uni extension subject.

Alternatively, do a subject that you want to learn about, and forget all about the marks. You have the luxury of knowing it probably won't count anyway.

i recommend psychology to literally everyone because it is an awesome vce subject.
in psych 3/4 the things you learn are awesome and applicable to real life, as well as being sufficiently science-y for the nerdy people, but not so hard that you need to be any good at science at all to get it. also it is competitive but not SUPER competitive like further maths, so as long as you know the content in psychology you should do well (like any other subject i guess)

it was fun as 10/10

Thanks for all the comments, much appreciated!

Regarding Uni Subjects, yes they sound good and all, but in order to get a H1 or something along those lines unless if you're a genius (i'm not one, really) a lot of work is needed. I'm not quite sure that it's worth it (heard 1st year uni is a bludge regardless, so doing the normal quota of subjects shouldn't be that hard, correct me if i'm wrong).

Regarding Psych, I didn't opt to do the psych alternatives/electives in year 9/10, is it hard to pick up and receive reasonable scores if i'm not going to be cranking out 30-60 practice exams (like I probably will for spesh and methods)?

Regarding Further, i'm kinda leaning towards this partially because not counting towards top 4 isn't a concern (it doesn't even matter if it's not in my top 6). But is there much of a gain, knowledge wise from committing to a year's worth of further or am I just going to sleep in class?

And has anyone done accounting and can give me a brief overview of how the subject fared for them? I used to be in the top 5 of my year in commerce related electives (except my teachers are now retired so I can't go to them for advice)
and i'm a little cut I chose chem instead of a commerce subject.

But yeah, thanks again for the feedback, much appreciated!

Do uni extension - then next year, you'll have 1/2 empty units where you can literally just do nothing and relax. :P Unless you want to go into med or something similar that extension doesn't affect, in which case as Polonomial said - whatever you do won't count, and you can just go on in the subject doing nothing, so do something that you've always wanted to learn about. Always thought psych was a pseudo-science? Do it for yourself and find out! Always thought the government made no sense? Learn about it a little bit in legal studies!

EDIT: hah, beaten by the edits:
It's not that hard to get a H1 in uni (or just a normal HD if you're at Monash. :P), just a lot of people make it out to be impossible. In fact, given how little the exam counts as compared to VCE, you'll probably find getting similar marks at uni is quite a bit easier (depending on what you pick).

the knowledge in psych 3/4 doesnt really build from anything, you can absolutely do 3/4 psych without any prior knowledge whatsoever and still get a 50 (if you work hard), in all seriousness if you do practice exams correctly (mark them each time, learn everything you get wrong, then do a different exam, and repeat) you dont need to do a ridiculous number to get a high score.

regarding further i am doing it now and i kinda regret it because everybody knows everything and the only difference between people in sacs is who makes silly mistakes or falls for a trick question, and most classes for further are ridiculously boring - but if you have a good teacher like i do, it becomes one of the most fun subjects if you actually wanna learn, there are heaps of awesome real world applications for further and it is quite useful knowledge

Sounds great, thanks!

I've narrowed my choices down to:

Accounting/Commerce subject
Uni extension Maths/Chem

Has anyone done either uni subject/doing either uni subject and could give me a brief talk down on how the year went/is going for them?
Thanks!

Which uni - because this does actually mean quite a bit of difference, different unis do different things at first year level (even if it's approximately the same)

Yeah, seeing as you go to Scotch, you have the benefit of having both the Chemistry and Maths extension being held at your school.
http://monash.edu/extension/study-options/mathematics.html
http://monash.edu/extension/study-options/chemistry.html
However, both of these programs are from Monash University which means if you want to go to Melbourne University, these credits will not carry.

Since these programs are being held at Scotch, you can probably ask some teachers about it, or even maybe sit in a class of current students if your interested

Are you sure because I'm pretty sure that they do carry over (I'll try and find some evidence to back it up but that's what I remember hearing from someone)...

EDIT: Can't find much about it (weirdly enough) though since UoM and Monash are a part of the Group of 8, I believe that you can gain credit for subjects since they have an agreement on such (plus it's a first year subject so they should be quite similar in style as well imo)

I don't really mind :)
I think it'll have to be Monash though since those programs are held at my school (more convenient).

Both unis normally credit the first year units that the other offers - I don't see why they wouldn't do it for extension?

Okay hamo, I've done the equivalent to Monash maths extension (MTH1030 is what I did, the extension program is MTH1040. The only difference is MTH1040 runs over the whole year instead of one semester like MTH1030) and I'm currently in the middle of what is essentially chemistry extension (I do the advanced stream, but it's identical to normal chem at Monash which is extension). With this in mind, I suggest checking out the subject reviews for MTH1030, CHM1011 and CHM1022 here before you ask any other questions on the units.
