Maths competition confusion

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum, nice to meet you all! :)

Just recently, I did a maths competition for year 9 by the AMT (Australian Maths Trust). I didn't do too well as I was really confused for most of the questions.

I'm just wondering what is this test based on? (e.g Quadratics, Linear equations...). How could I sharpen my skills to do better next time?

Thanks!

(Sorry, I opened up a few tabs and posted at the wrong section. Is meant to be at maths, thanks. If anyone has a guide for newbies here, it'll be great.)

Heylo,

Coincidentally, I just did my maths competition today so Im gonna talk about it in a way of how I think of it.
So I've joined the competition for a couple of years and the questions were mostly problems with stories.
Eg. Gary went to the supermarket and got milk for $5.60. If he gave in $10, how much change did he get?

The competition doesn't really include quadratics and linear equations. They are more problem solving, arithmetic and geometry.
The problem solving task most commonly include measurement there are a couple with ratios and money.
The geometry questions most of the time would ask us to find one of the angles of a circle or triangle.
I can't exactly remember what they give us for arithmetic soz.
Finally the last 5 of the hardest questions may be problem solving as well, as they require thinking A LOT to solve the problem. And since it may be the hardest in the competition, that is why the points are worth the most.

So ^thats how I think of the competition and the different parts to it.
I think to help you get a general idea, maybe get a copy of one of the competitions of your year level or above and get a general idea of what the questions will be based on. If you want real versions of the competition from the past (i have a few year 9  and 10) or have any questions, you can PM me.
