Are you able to solve logs in a way such that you do not have to exclude some values in the end?

For example, 2 log_e(x) = log_e(9)

log_e(x) = 0.5*log_e(9) = log_e(root9) = log_e(3)

x=3

instead of introducing x^2, then rejecting x = -3?

Yeah, that's fine.

For the (usually) first differentiation q, for two marks do you have to do more than just write the derivative? like write the rule for the chain rule etc ?

Just make it obvious which rule you're using. (for example, for , show the multiplying by 2 separately instead of jumping into the final answer)

For exam 2, we're allowed "a protractor, set-squares, aids for curve sketching" -> would a mathomat be fine?
Is this only for exam 2?
Physics [50] | Chemistry [45] | English [42] | IT:SD [44]
ATAR: 98.95

Don't bother - just use rough sketches. It'll be faster, and the examiners won't care.

I would still suggest taking a ruler, though, because straight lines are nice/you might find it useful for checking things.

Remember that most graphs and images they show won't be to scale.

Hi EulerFan101,
How do you restrict the domain on a cas calc for the solve function? For example, the question 6/sin[65]=9/sin
  • comes up with a weird answer involving N1. I know that the domain must be restricted to find the answer; however, I am unsure how to do this on the calculator.

I can't comment on the Classpad, but for the TI=nspire, there's a symbol that looks like | somewhere. Put that AFTER the solve command, and then write your domain. For exampe:

solve(blahblahblah)|0<x<2pi

I know it's off topic (but I'm going to sleep now LOL) but good luck to all you guys tomorrow! Let's go smash Exam 1 tomorrow and be ready for Exam 2 the day after :)

BTW: Thanks everyone for helping out too especially EulerFan101! :D

Everyone else should probably follow his lead. ;)

Hi EulerFan101,
Thanks for your response. :) What would the restricted domain on the solve function be for 10/sin[83]=9/sin x in order to get the right answer?

It depends on what they've said it is in the question.

The question says that x in this equation is an acute angle:10/sin[83]=9/sin x. It is a sine rule question. Would the restricted domain be 0<x<90?

In degrees, yes. Depending on if your angle is in degrees or radians, you may need to put it in as pi/2.

Okay, I'm much more comfortable writing and working in pencil than in pen, as I tend to erase and go back a lot and take up quite a lot of space, and I've read various threads on the use of pencils in methods, but I'm still seeing mixed opinions.

So, I guess my question is, would there be any chance of me being penalized, or my answers being smudged or scanning improperly if I were to use my favorite 2B pacer pencil tomorrow instead of a pen? I know I'd perform better with the ability to change my responses, but that's hardly worth it if the examiners can't even read what I've written :/

I honestly don't know - I don't use enough varieties of pencils to know.
If it looks more white than black, maybe use a pen.

Hmm, it's relatively dark and doesn't seem too prone to smudging, I'm more worried about it scanning incorrectly.... Would it be worth turning up a little early and asking one of the invigilators?

You can try, but they probably won't know themselves. You can always try scanning it yourself and seeing how clear it comes through.
