Any course can as long as the course allows electives from any faculty/area. You need to do the specific unit at Monash that is the equivalent of Year 12 Chemistry. I don't go to Monash so I can't tell you. Either someone else on here can reply or your best bet alternatively is to speak to admissions.

thanks heaps!
are you aware of any other courses at monash that offer chemistry that can be used as a bridging unit?

CHM1011 and CHM1022 are designed that you can come into them even if you've done very little chemistry before (essentially all you need is to know how to read the periodic table, know the structure of an atom, and how to do stoichiometry, which basically equates to unit 1 VCE chemistry. There's also a workshop in o-week to assist you if you haven't done any of this before.) Since these units are technically higher standard than VCE chemistry, I'd presume you could use them as a bridging unit - CHM1022 may even credit over to the nutrition degree (but I take it you plan to transfer after semester 1 if able, so).

thats true, other problem is that i don't think i will be able to get into the bachelor of science at monash either, it still requires a 25 for chemistry
so i don't think there is a possible bridging unit through a monash course that i can take

You don't *need* chemistry, you may be able to meet one of your other subjects. In-fact, it might be good to tell us what you're studying (like all your subjects) so we can assist more.

Prerequisites:

Y12 : Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English ( EAL ) or at least 25 in English other than EAL; and a study score of at least 25 in one of Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Maths: Mathematical Methods ( CAS ), Maths: Specialist Mathematics, Physics or Psychology.

Any broad course ("Science" "Arts" etc) allows you to take electives at Monash. Specialised, professional courses like radiology or engineering, in general, do not allow electives.

You have two needs:

(1) A course that allows you to take up an elective or otherwise do chemistry

(2) A course you can score well in. Afterall, if you score poorly, it will impact on your transfer request.

If you're a science based person, picking up a bachelor of science (at any university) would be a fantastic choice and tick both those boxes. You could still probably take a chemistry elective within an arts degree as well.

would you know by any chance if i did the bachelor of "food and nutrition science" at deakin for one year, would i be able to transfer to the start of the "bachelor of nutrition science" at monash the second year? I'm sure they will have to cover some kind of chemistry right? I'm just not sure if its possible to do this

That question is probably best directed to monash because it is very specific. Anyone can email them, even if you're not a student. It's actually encouraged because you're basically a prospective customer afterall.

For all those reading this post & considering the degree of nutrition science or nutrition and dietetics for 2015, i am a student who will be attending Monash University for nutrition science.

firstly, the nutrition science course is three years in length, whereas the dietetics course is four. However, the nutrition & dietetics course IS NO LONGER RUNNING AFTER 2015. so your only option to become qualified as a dietitian, under DAA, is to do nutrition science & apply to get into the masters of dietetics practice. this course however is NOT commonwealth supported, hence the university makes more money out of you. However, if you have completed the nutrition science course it is 6 months shorter.

furthermore, these courses are EXACTLY the same for the first two years. equiping you with both scientific foundations & population health, diversity, chem, biological science in relation to nutrition in food etc.

Either way, if your aspiration is to become a dietitian, like it is mine, than either course will get you there. given you are dedicated.

the course load is roughly 20-25 hours per week, and the fourth year (honours) for dietetics, is more work placed experience etc.

You are recognised under DAA, and can therefore practice dietetics, but you will not be able to with nutrition science and thus will need to do a masters if that is your desire.

Hope this helps any future students :)
