I started playing the guitar out of self-interest. My sister was playing the flute and my brother was playing the piano. Each night one of my parents would go to them and listen and help them practice their instrument. I wanted time with them so I decided that by playing an instrument would make them sit with me and spend the evening with me.
What a horrible child I was.

I started playing the guitar too! In grade 5, when I was 10... Lol... I guess I started because I heard 3am by Matchbox 20 solely on guitar, and thought it was absolutely beautiful, hence I decided to give it a go. I never got up to that level though, I always seemed to play mediocre. :P I am still trying though, I want to play that song at valedictory night. :)

And you failed at it, and so I stole your guitar and became better at it than you pretty damn quickly.

Tsk tsk.

My parents made me start learning piano when I was 4...I got bored and stopped taking lessons when I was 11, started learning guitar instead. I learnt cello for 2 years in primary school, because there was a free introductory program where you got 2 years of lessons, but only on certain instruments. I got bored and quit cello.
In hindsight, I wish I could still play cello.

Back in year 6 i also learned french horn, apparently it was good for music scholarships, but I never practiced because it was boring and I never learned how to breath properly

I think it's so important to be able to play more than one note at a time and create harmonies. Piano's the best at that, and ever since I stopped taking lessons and started playing what I like I've enjoyed it a lot more. Still, I kinda view the piano as a solitary instrument, and a passionate yet abstract one, a bit like a Kubrick film.
In contrast the sound of a guitar is much more raw and unbridled, and it's a lot of fun to play. Yin and Yang I guess :P

The electric guitar is an amazingly versatile instrument; perhaps second only to a keyboard/synth.

The HUGE range of sounds you can produce make it so enjoyable.

I started playing guitar because i enjoyed music with guitar in it.

And srsly, chix luv it.

Year 10, friend brought a guitar for my birthday which then led me to teach myself to play and now I absolutely love it!

Still, I kinda view the piano as a solitary instrument

Yeah, the only thing I miss about oboe is being able to play with a big orchestra... well you can still do that with piano I guess but it's much harder

started piano a few days before my 5th birthday - was forced by grandparents.
came to Australia - was forced to keep going by parents.
I only started actually enjoying piano in about year 9 when I switched to my current awesome teacher :P

as for oboe I randomly decided to start learning it in year 6 or something but I quit cos it was boring and cos I almost failed grade 6 :P

Similar story, 'cept it was always my parents that forced me and I never enjoyed it. :P

Started learning piano in grade 2, only because my older sister did as well.
When she quit a few years later, so did I.
Thankfully by the time she picked it up again, I had finally gained enough independence not to follow. I can't say I particularly liked it in the first place :)

I mainly play the piano.
I start when I was 3, I was self taught, and just played music that I listened to. I loved playing classical, romantic and rock pieces. My parents then made me go to lessons when I was 5, and that love eventually turned to hatred. I was finally able to quit when I finished grade 8 at the age of 13 (AMEB.. it was the best feeling walking out of that building and never looking back).
I still played piano at school at that time, but I still loathed it.
I learned how to play jazz and blues pieces during that time
When I was 12, I taught myself how to play violin and flute. I wanted to play these instruments because sounded like such beautiful and delicate instruments, even though were hard to master.
Two years ago, I picked up an acoustic guitar. It's just so nice to play something simple and have it sounding amazing.
Two weeks ago I picked up the bass. It's fun, and it's something I've always wanted to do :)
It's actually quite fun.
Nowadays, I'm writing and playing piano. I'm starting to play the difficult pieces again, and I love it.

Whoops, I ranted. Sorry D:
Got this.
