Bachelor of Commerce questions
« on: November 17, 2014, 06:58:37 pm »

Hi guys,

I graduated from year 12 two years ago and didn't really get a good ATAR (low 60's), it wasn't because I struggled academically but more because of personal issues. Anyway, since then I finished a Bachelor of Arts with a GPA of 6.1 and am now looking at applying for a Bachelor of Commerce at Melbourne Uni but had a few questions.

1) Will the fact that I didn't do any Mathematics subjects in year 12 impact my chances of getting accepted?
2) If I get accepted, will I be able to claim credit for the breadth subjects?
3) Generally, how selective is it? and what are my chances of getting accepted?

I would have searched up these questions on the website, but they only had a pre-requisite section for students who have just graduated.

1) Will it affect your chances of getting it? Most likely no. If you got the required GPA then they will not look at your year 12 subjects. For example, as long as you get 95+ ATAR (or whatever the cut-off is), you will be accepted into BComm regardless of your subjects. However, most commerce subjects require that you have at least done some mathematics so if you haven't done any mathematics you will have to do a mathematics subject in 1st semester.

2) I am not sure about this but most likely yes. It depends on which university you are coming from, most likely. GO8 universities allow credit transfer easily between them but it is still possible for non-GO8 unis.

3) If you get the required ATAR/GPA, you will get in.

Really appreciate your help.

Does anyone know what the required GPA is?

I have no idea. I think it is best to ask the university. Either ask on the sticky thread or email the commerce student centre.

Try emailing this guy [email protected] directly, he is the commerce student services consultant. If he doesn't know the answer, he will refer you to people who know. If he doesn't reply, then just email [email protected].

I have been told that I cannot be accepted into the degree without fulfilling the mathematics pre-requisite. Going to enrol in the Community Access Program (CAP) and complete a single unit equivalent to Math Methods (Introduction to Mathematics). Hopefully after that I will be accepted in the mid-term intake for the Bachelor of Commerce.

*bump*

Hey guys, I'm on the Online Application System and for some reason I cannot seem to find the unit. I even typed in Community Access Program hoping to see a list of everything offered, but nothing is working.

Has anyone applied for a CAP unit that can help?

You will need to speak to the science student office directly as CAP subjects are a non govt subsidised scheme. Essentially, you will be treated like an external full fee paying student with no HECS or FEE HELP.

Personally, id recommend actually enrolling in a b.arts/b.environments, do intro.maths as a breadth - then transfer over to the b.comm.

Scratch the b.arts option, you have one already.

Id also consider looking at the unilearn mathematics course, melbourne uni accepts that as a methods altenative as well.

Would you recommend the Unilearn option over the Introduction to Mathematics?

Cost an time wise, id probably just enrol in a b.env - do intro maths and b.comm subjects as breadths - then transfer over in 2nd semester. One drawback is your course gpa be omes part of your academic credentials; so better work hard.

Just got off the phone with Melbourne Uni, and wow, the single unit 'introduction to Mathematics' costs almost $3000 and is not government subsidised. Must be paid upfront. Ridiculous.
