Thanks for the advice guys, I'm also doing physics 1/2 alongside CSL.

Is it worth doing any additional Chinese work along with my XJS homework?

ya to be brutally honest, depending on which xjs you go to, it's probably not enough work if you want to get a good SS. so continuosly working on 'projects' like general convo or detailed study is a good idea. learning new vocab every now and then is also not a bad idea

So i was told that I'm having an imaginative/personal essay SAC this Saturday and I'm freaking out because my essays skills are not really good... my teacher did mention that it will be related to school life so can anyone give me a list of essay topics that i could write before I do the SAC? How many words are we meant to have in our detailed study for SL? I've heard 10000-2000 words, but that seems like heaps ..

My bro had a 22000 word detailed study and got a 95/100 for his oral, I had a 6500 word detailed study and got 98.

Quality > Quantity all the time

He got a better study score but that was because of the written exam, not the oral component.

I would say that as long as you cover all aspects of your detailed study (what is your detailed study out of curiosity?), you should be fine. Honestly I think 10 000 words is a tad big (remember chances are you'll have to memorise it as well), especially when you can get the job done with less words. My detailed study was 5000 words (well 4931 to be exact ;) ), but I arranged mine into each subtopic, of which there was basically one big word bank that summarised the topic- e.g. one of my subtopics was 大熊猫的外形, so I had a big paragraph on their appearance, followed by smaller questions such as 刚出生的熊猫有什么样子?

Honestly the best approach imo is to have answers the examiners are most likely to ask you, then keep practising with as many different people as you can, as they will ask you new questions!

Might I ask what your Detailed study was??

Is it possible to memorize most of my detailed study and general convo these holidays even though half the time I don't even know what I'm saying? My detailed study is around 6000 words and GC nearly 10000.

It depends imo; ones' ability to memorise is different for everybody, but if you're determined then it's possible :). Also, what do you mean when you say you don't understand what you're saying? Do you mean they're not your answers? Or that you respond with jibberish (trust me that's what I did for the majority of year 12, before I refined my answers)? Honestly it really helps to know what you're saying in that you at least understand the sentences you're going to respond with, as otherwise you're taking a big risk as the assessors could pick up on a part of your answer and ask you about it, so you NEED to be able to respond to these follow up questions  to do well.

At this stage I had about 2/3 of my detailed study done- most was done term 3 iirc. I wouldn't say you're behind, and you still have time before the oral exam! Just keep up consistent work and it'll be ok.

For your second statement/question/blah in a sense as long as you are at a level that you can respond fluently and spontaneously to a question asked, it doesn't matter if you improvise on the spot. In fact that's what we do in conversation with others in real life, and improvising answers is very likely to impress assessors, or in other words, memorising answers completely is limiting and is easily picked up by assessors (not saying memorising is bad, but if you memorise answers, don't fall for their traps if you know what I mean). I would still make sure you have a basic idea of what you want to answer with though, for example for a question like 养宠物有什么好处?some ideas could be 1. 养宠物能让你心情大好 2. 养宠物还能培养孩子们的责任感和爱心以及社交能力 etc And these "ideas" could also be incorporated in similar questions.

For my detailed study, my teachers made a detailed study for the class for everyone memorize it so sometimes I don't even know what's going on. What happens if an assessor asks you questions and you don't know what it means? and what types of questions do they usually ask you for gc?

Id ask your teacher what each sentence you don't understand means, because it's really important you know what your saying. If an assessor does that out if the blue ( ie not a follow up question) then you can ask them (in Chinese) what the question means, or what a certain phrase means- often this is better than replying with something irrelevant. Although unless you're hitting the top end and they want to challenge you, you should have prepared for what they can ask you.
