I can honestly say in VCE that my sleeping pattern was shocking towards the end. However, I remember talking to this one guy before uni who always seemed to have a spring in his step. He said he ALWAYS slept before 12am, no matter what. Plus he had a pretty darn good diet.
So I applied his strategy in Semester 1, and for the first 5 or so weeks of uni I slept before 12am everyday, not like 11:59pm, but usually 10:30pm-11:00pm. I can honestly say I curbed my coffee habit quickly and just felt so alive. Although it seems difficult and your life seems busy, it's doable :P
I know a guy who did a degree and majored in Biology and Psychology while being a football player in uni, managing a relationship and being a bodybuilder. He still got those 8-9 hours. I guess it's about a lot of discipline.

The dux in my year sleeps before 9:30pm every night.
His academics are amazing.

Coincidence? I think not :P

Same story here, not to mention her co-curricular involvement is pretty amazing.

Unfortunately my sleep patterns are so messed up ( I sleep at 2am and get up at 9-11 am), it's really hard to fix

So some of the BENEFITS of sleep are:
-Wake up in time to go to class

HEALTH RISKS of sleeping less:
-Get strangled by teacher for sleeping in and missing class

...In serious though, a good sleeping pattern has a LOT of tangible flow-on benefits. Your energy levels peak when they're supposed to peak, and you can get a lot of stuff done in a day instead of feeling like you have to have a nanna nap at 4pm.
