really really dumb question about writing essays!

hi guys!

I just have a question:

if you are given a topic and you have to write an essay, do you have to either agree or disagree with it?
can you sit on the fence and go both ways??!?

also, I assume you write an intro, 3 body paragraphs and a conclusion
in each of the 3 body paragraphs, do you mention a subsystem (like morphology, lexicology, phonology etc)?? and how it links with the topic?

Nah it's perfectly fine to explore both sides -- indeed, this sort of approach lends itself to more complexity so it's definitely something you should consider doing if the topic lends itself to it.

You can structure your essays by subsystem, but that is a weak way of doing things. I recommend a thematic approach to essay writing, where each theme gets broken down and analysed from different subsystems.

2 paragraphs for, 1 against? or 1 for, 2 against?

You should be aiming for about 75% towards your contention. One paragraph exploring the issues against your contention/mentioning of any contradictions should be sufficient. It really gives more depth to your essays.

EDIT: sorry, I didn't realise this was english language. Have no experience in eng lang except for units 1/2 ignore my advice haha
