I'm doing BA/BSc since I'm interested in a lot of things and really wanted to keep my options open.
The only problem is that I can only do 2 subjects from science and arts and I'm having trouble trying to narrow things down.
My first semester subjects are
BIO1011: First year biol
ESC1011: Geoscience
ATS1873: International Relations
ATS1314: Human Rights
I'm not sure what career I want to have, but I definitely want a job where I can travel a lot and help people. I enjoy nature, so I like the outdoors and environment etc.
I've been real interested in foreign affairs and a very far fetched dream would be working for the DFAT. But working as a geologist/ecologist/environmentalist overseas sounds amazing too. I've had people tell me that job prospects in I.R is very competitive. I want to be realistic, and and get out of uni with a job.
I picked Human rights because I'm passionate about it ( but now I'm having second guesses. I was flipping through the handbook and Human geography seems more appropriate than Human rights with the career I would like to have in mind.
It seems more real world based than theory based with Human rights theory, and it ties in with things I'm passionate about (like international aid)
http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/units/ATS1310.html: ATS1310: Extreme Earth natural hazards and human vulnerability.
Majoring or minoring in human geography seems like it will open a lot more job prospects for me as well. The only problem that on the handbook it says it's a
Research Challenge: Investigate program-, and this:
Workload requirements
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
Anyone who's done this unit can give me their opinion on it? Do you pick project yourself and to your own research?
I'm thinking about trying out I.R/H.R for the first week and see how things go. Is it a straightforward process to change units one week into uni?
Since you guys know a lot more about uni than I, I'd greatly appreciate your insight and advice.
Thanks.
