To OP - You are going to be fine man.

Obviously making friends is quite daunting at first but isn't it the same way for everybody? The suggestion I'd make is reminiscent of the ones made prior. You can make friends in tutes and during lectures. A simple hi, how are you doing would suffice.

Even though I haven't got to University yet, I know for a fact that this applies every where.

On the topic of the clothes you should wear, I understand what you mean there. Personally myself I want to make sure I look presentable but given your current situation (comfort) I'd strongly advise you to wear whatever you feel comfortable in. If anyone speaks ill of you then I'd say that he/she isn't worth impressing in the first place.

I'm sure any of the guys here on AN would be willing to socialise with you. You could also join a club too as that would help you find people with the same interests as yourself.

But yeah, if I were you, I'd probably not worry too much about clothing, were what you feel comfortable in. With making friends I'd probably encourage you to be a bit more outgoing and speak/smile/converse with people doing the same subjects/degrees as yourself.

Obviously it may be tough to begin with but as you speak to more and more people it will then start to sink in that it's not hard to make friends.

There was a great autobiography that came out a few years ago, and I can't remember who wrote it, but there was a chapter to the tune of 'learn how to be alone, cause it's gonna happen quite often.' You don't have to accept it in a really bitter way, but out of all the days and all the breaks you'll have, chances are there'll be instances where you don't have people to hang out with.

This is a really good observation. "Being alone" and "being lonely" are very different things: to be alone is an external state of the world, coming from not having people around you; whereas loneliness stems from the inside, a desire for other people to interact with you. Being able to enjoy one's own company is an important skill. Think of it as making friends with yourself - once you've managed that, it will probably be easier to make friends with other people, too.

I don't know about any recent autobiographies but I do recommend Herman Hesse's "Siddhartha" as having an interesting exploration of concepts relating to this and the nature of happiness (as well as being just a generally good book).

On a more pragmatic note, a big university campus is a pretty daunting place to try to make friends, but it's definitely possible, and a lot of people have posted really good practical suggestions already.

Had to laugh at the university uniform suggestion above. Half the point of university is to help school leavers become their own person, to own their personalities, flaws, style, thoughts, opinions, etc. You can't do that when you are in a straight jacket. Uni is not practise for the real world/working life in any way shape or form, including what to wear.

Don't you worry my Asian (assuming you are Asian from your username) brother. Tell me which toilet you frequent and when I start uni, I'll come looking for you when I have my breaks.

It's perfectly normal for us to have anxiety problems. Heck I used to have it as well and at times I still get those attacks but I just tell myself that no-one gives a damn because I'm not anyone special. If I can't remember the person who walked past me 5 seconds ago, I'm almost certain that they won't remember me or at least they won't remember me 5 minutes from now. I got over my anxiety by always putting myself out there. All it takes is one good interaction and your confidence will soar. Even by smiling and saying good morning or good afternoon to randoms lifts my mood and lifts my anti-social mood that I get in the morning.

Regarding your clothing, I say rock those trackies. It takes a lot of courage to be able to rock it while everyone looks like they're going to a fancy dinner. Do what you want and wear it with confidence. Anyone that says anything negative is only jealous they don't have the courage to wear it.

I wasn't kidding about telling me which toilet you frequent. We need an AN pin or something that we can pin to our bags or books so that we can recognise each other and no ANer will be lonely again!

Cmon m8 lift your game. You should have these items at the bare minimum when attending a tute:

* High quality Versace suit

* Vintage mechanical timepiece. None of this cheap shit like Rolex. A Patek Philippe 5107 Calatrava is a good starting point. You can get one for ~ 20k used.

* There's nothing like rocking up to a tutorial and placing a F*** OFF briefcase down on the desk. I recommend a Louis Vuitton President Classeur Briefcase. Preferably in Monogram.

* Montblanc fountain pen is a good writing instrument.

Hopefully by now you realise I am kidding and you've had a good laugh :D Seriously, don't worry about clothing at Uni. The real world and Uni are two very different things.

You need to talk to the student union of the respective universities.
Edit: it'd be awesome to have a AN society  :D
