This made me very sad. They make it sound as though the only way of getting into med is by direct entry. Are they doing this because they want people to pay thousands to buy their UMAT prep resources our is all of this widely accepted? Someone please wake me up from my nightmare. :( :(
Thanks, TheAspiringDoc

In my opinion, MedEntry have a history of producing articles that are heavily biased (and extremely obviously so, at that) and this is no different. There is zero basis to the idea that if you don't get into an undergraduate medical course, you will be significantly disadvantaged and unable to study medicine in the future. If you have any questions about a specific dot point on that list, I can give you my perspective on it. Some of them are now factually incorrect, due to the passage of time.

Unfortunately, the industry is completely unregulated and they can get away with whatever they want. Go have a look at umat.net.au

In response to the article, hang on a second, if I'm not mistaken, and please tell me if I'm wrong, there are multiple ways to get into medicine. I'm preeeeetty sure it's not limited to Monash or even Biomedicine for that matter. What happened to us poor Science geeks?
Does everyone else not have a chance?

I would say there are valid points such as it taking less time and money to become a practitioner. However, I believe it is a marketing ploy since they are running a business. One thing they didn't say is that even if you got the 99th percentile in the UMAT, it does not guarantee your entrance into Monash Med. There is an interview component that is equally weighted and within that interview, are mini interviews like a speed date that test your ability to solve problems and pick out your thought processes.

The UMAT and GAMSAT are very similar in that doing well does not mean you get into Medicine whether it be at Melbourne or Monash as there are other factors and processes that are involved.

Also to balance the scale a little, there is a method to Melbourne's "madness". There's a reason it takes longer to get into medicine. Doing an undergrad allows broader knowledge within your field. It is also the time where your foundational knowledge is being built. An undergrad provides more options because changing careers paths is very very common.

Look, it doesn't matter how you get to where you want to be (provided your actions are legal haha) but if you get there. Don't get too caught up in which one is better just try for both and see where it takes you. I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason.

Good luck with your studies and the UMAT

You're absolutely right, both MedEntry and I have completely neglected the idea of Science. This was very thoughtless of me, for this I am sorry. Although since UoM science offers all the same courses as Biomed (plus more!) Im thinking they would more or less fit into the same box..

Haha yes us Science geeks get a chance as well. In fact I'm pretty sure anyone from any degree can try out for med provided they do the 3 prereq subjects and the GAMSAT
