Hello!
I made an account because I saw this and was immediately like "I need thisssss" (So I'm kinda new c: I also don't know how to use this eh..)

Haha sorry. I'm in year 9, also trying out for JMSS this year. Not sure what to do....

Ah I wanted to ask, if you guys knew anyone who got into the school without tutor? Thanks a bunch! ;D

Yea, i got in without a Tutor, never had one in fact and quite a few people got in that never had tutoring.

Some people will really benefit from having a tutor (i wouldn't know though) and others find it doesn't really impact their results. The thing I heard is that they make you sit MANY practice exams in these tutoring places and this could actually be very beneficial. If you don't go to tutor, you need to be confident in your abilities (e.g having common sense and being able to write coherently), as this is essential. The exam isn't all and I found that it was the interview which really differentiated between the successful students and the others.

Good luck to all prospective students! You won't regret it! ;)

I see... Thank you!
Also, do you know how many people got an interview from when you got in, and how many people actually got in. (Oh and... Uh.. If you could, how many people tried out at your school?) Sorry for the load of questions-

haha its ok, Im just glad to help out!

In my mentor group, there a 5 year 10s and 4 of them including me got in and we've never had tutors.

And from my school? We had 5 try out (all from the smart class btw), all 5 of us got into the interview stage and 3 of us got in.

hope this helps, just post if you have more questions.

good luck!

Ah I see.

I'm in the alpha class too but to be honest I don't think its very different to the normal class.

:/ But this year only 2 people are trying out at my school. (That i know of) Do you think the both of us will get an interview??

Yea, the 'a' class is different at different schools. We learnt accelerated Maths, Science and English (by accelerated, I mean by like 1 year ahead) so I suppose it helped.

Really?! Only 2 people?!
I wonder which school you go to as most schools I know of have around 5+ trying out each year.
As for getting through to the interview...it depends on how well you academically perform, which I assume is pretty well as most of the students perform well who sit this exam.

post if you want any more questions answered!
good luck!

Don't worry if you're not in accelerated at all~

Many of my friends were in mainstream class for all subjects and still got in :)

How are you guys studying, in terms of getting ready for the maths and science part of the examinations?
tips? ???

I'm finishing my entire year 9 maths and science textbook, and also bought some ICAS test papers to practice with. I have never worked this hard, and I never knew I would be capable of it... XD I'm a pretty lazy person, you see.

Well, I covered most of the year 10 course in preparation,  but a good understanding of the year 9 course would be sufficient. The science writing pieces are what you have to watch out for...

Good luck

Yeah, I figured the science will be crucial but I feel I know less in maths than science...

Thank you. (:

To be honest, I'm trying to do both.

Managing time though... I think that I'm preparing for the jmss test more than my school exams.
