then there are two science writing pieces which probably go for around 15 minutes (correct me if I'm wrong).

its 30 mins for each piece  :), 5 mins reading time and 25 mins writing time

The second writing piece is a prac report I'm pretty sure (again, correct me if I'm wrong). You'll be given another topic and they'll ask you to write a prac.

i think they give you a choice between writing a prac or another essay for the second writing piece. Im not 100% sure if thats whats going to happen this year, but thats what at least happened last year.

Is it too late to apply/start studying for the entrance examinations? I really would like to go to this school but have yet gotten approval of my parents :(
Also, how much would one need to study to get in? Of course, this would depend on the individual but if say one got in the top arrows on the Year 7 NAPLAN testing (as a benchmark).
Sorry for the inconvenience :(

Nope, applications close on June 12th and the test is on June 20th, all the information you need should be here http://www.jmss.vic.edu.au/jmss/2649/entrance-tests-and-applications/?frm_id=65.
As for studying, you just want to work on your speed/timing for maths/numerical/science reasoning but as for the science essays, you really have to go through some of the year 9/year 10 science topics. Getting top arrows on the Year 7 NAPLAN testing is somewhat of an advantage but timing is the most important factor. Besides timing, I would just revise your year 9 maths and science (maybe go through a bit of year 10) and also do practice test. Practice tests are absolutely key so buy some past ICAS papers (if your parents let you) and do them over and over again, until you understand every question and get 100% percent on the test. This is the closest way to get familiar with the actual exam. Also do a lot of logic/abstract reasoning puzzles, these will help a lot on the numerical and science reasoning tests.
Hope that helped.

Oh oh... I'm in Laos from the 12th to the 21st - are there any catch-up sort of dates for the assessment?

Thank you for the thorough answer! I'm planning to go over my maths and science textbooks now, but I do have a problem with time (I never get time to check the ICAS papers). I understand that you aren't supposed to leak information that may be unfair to others trying out, but are the essays on general topics such as "drugs are bad" or "explain how the hippocampus is involved in memory"?

I heard rumors that the 3% rule is going o be changed the 6% because of the number of people trying out this year. Does anyone know whether this true?

Where have you heard these rumors from? Three percent to six percent is a massive change that can be the difference of six people getting in from a two-hundred student cohort (with the three percent rule) to twelve students. I would highly doubt that this is true. If this is true though that would throw a spanner in the works for everyone trying out including me. If JMSS were to change the rule I would theorize that they would change it to four percent since doubling the percent rule would be ridiculous. Please keep me updated and please tell me where you got this information from.

P.S You better not be joking.

I can confirm that the 3% rule will remain UNCHANGED and will still apply for enrollment at JMSS for 2016.

Don't take my word for it.  See below:

http://www.jmss.vic.edu.au/images/JMSS_Enrolment_Policy_Year10_2016V1.pdf

Page 2 article 1.8 :

1.8 - The maximum number of students admitted into John Monash Science School in Year 10 must not exceed 3% of any one school’s Year 9 enrolment. There is no cap on enrolments from any one school to JMSS at any other year level.
