Getting into medicine

Hello  ;D ;D

I'm in Year 11, and I was wondering how you get into graduate medicine at Melbourne Uni.
I know you have to do a Bachelor of Science or Biomed, and achieve certain grades and all, but how does the selection process work from thereafter, presuming you achieved the marks? Does the ATAR still count at that stage? Are certain students more likely to get in? etc.

Just a confused Year 11  :-[  ahaha

p.s. I do eng, chem, physics, psych and methods, if that helps.  :D

Usually selection is based on a combination of your GPA (think of it as a kind of score that summarises your raw marks), your GAMSAT score and your performance in an interview.

ATAR will only count if you're looking for a Full-feed placed spot. So if you achieve a 99+ ATAR and chose to do study Biomedicine at Melbourne then say if you don't get a CSP placement in Medicine, you can get a guaranteed FFP placement, given that your ATAR was above 99 and you satisfied the other necessary pre-requisites.

If you get a 99.90+ ATAR then you are eligible for the Chancellor's Scholars program which guarantees you a place in the MD given that you pass an MMI which you can sit before beginning first year. The only thing is that you must maintain a WAM (just an average of your marks) above 70.

If you're set on doing Medicine, and I see you're subjects fulfil the pre-requisites, why not just apply for the Monash MBBS in your Year 12 VTAC application? That could save you a few years of time and definitely save you a lot of unnecessary stress.
2012-2013: VCE
2014-2016: Bachelor of Biomedicine at Monash University

Oh right that makes sense!! AHAHAHA

So it's possible to get into medicine if you get like an ATAR, of say 86, and do a Bachelor of Science, and achieve the GPA requirement and do well in the GAMSAT and the interview??

I was thinking of doing that, but I don't think I'll make it  :'(

Assuming the cut offs for BSc don't change then yup. Once you're in they don't use your ATAR anymore.

If you don't do the UMAT, you most certainly won't make it. But if you at least give it a try, you never know, maybe you'll do well enough to get in  ;)
