My understanding of Arts is that one doesn't necessarily do it to get a job at the end, although many people will aim for that which would be reflected in their majors - some of which have more "real world" applications than others. Many Arts students will have to do honours or another postgraduate/graduate degree in order to be "employable" in a job they like but the generic skills associated with the Arts degree can be very desireable to employers. Plus, there is a certain satisfaction in having a good general knowledge in a range of subjects and studying what you enjoy.

It's their fault for doing a straight arts degree. Does it increase your knowledge and educate you well? Yeah, it does. Does it make you employable? Hell no.

everyone i know that is doing arts is doing it either to get into another degree in the future or because they dont know what they wanna do and arts looked easy or because they didnt have a job they were after and arts looked interesting and they dont really care too much about their future career at this stage.

Does anyone else have the problem with older people (Ie. your parents) having this idea that an Arts degree has to do with painting and drawings etc... LOL
No matter how many times I explain to my wog parents they fail to distinguish Arts with courses like "Fine Arts"

Well I'm actually pursuing my Arts degree at UoM with a direct program to qualify me to become a clinical psycholgist.

That is, I will major in psychology during my three years of undergraduate study (this will be an 125 accredited sequence authorised by the Australian Psychological Society). The rest of my units will be comprised of the Arts units I am interested in- Literature, History, Politics. I'll then complete my honours year in psych which will qualify me to work as a psychologist on a probationary basis. Then to become a fully qualified clinical psychologist, I'll need to complete a 2 year masters degree. It will be a long haul (being 6 years) but it will be worth it in the long run.

As you can see, Arts can be pursued in a very directed, meaningful way.

Is that why UoM had to slash its number of Arts subjects in two and made large portions of the faculty redundant? :)

Haha! I remember when these protesters stormed into our Introductory Macroeconomics lecture about the Arts subjects, and everyone was booing the protesters.
