A great initiative brightsky! Will email our Head of Science about this once he gets back from a Science Competition in Singapore! :)

Just a quick question, is there a set number of students that can enter per school?

Hey man, for a host of reasons, we have decided to impose a limit of 5 students per school. We will be emailing the schools on our contact list as soon as Term 3 begins with details on how to register, so ask your Head of Science to be on the lookout for that (JMSS is definitely on our contact list)!

Feel free to post below if you have any other queries! :)

Hi brightsky, this definitely sounds like a great competition!!
Is it possible for you to list the schools that can participate or is that something that is kept confidential?

Thanks heaps! :)

Hi AceVCE777, there are around 50 schools currently on our contact list, but we are certainly not restricting eligibility for the competition to students from these schools. If you would like to register for the ACHSC, but are concerned that your school might not be on our contact list, just get your Head of Science to email [email protected] expressing an interest in signing students up for the competition. Alternatively, direct them to the registration page on our website (http://www.achsc.org.au/for-the-teacher/), which will be updated with the registration form on Monday, 13 July when Term 3 begins.

Most definitely! The competition is aimed at year 10 students, as some basic cell biology will be assumed, which year 9 students might not have been exposed to yet at school. However, like the Australian Science Olympiad Competition, year 9 students who are looking for a challenge and feel that they are capable of competing against year 10 students can sign up for ASCHC too.

Hi TheAspiringDoc, the ACHSC Syllabus will be made available for downloading on our website once registration opens. In the meantime, if you are keen on doing some preliminary preparation for the competition, my suggestion would be to have a read of the articles listed on our 'For the Student' page (http://www.achsc.org.au/for-the-student/). After that, if you have time, have a browse of the National Cancer Institute website (http://www.cancer.gov). The ACHSC Syllabus draws heavily from the material contained in the articles and on the NCI website.

Great initiative! Out of interest, why did you base your curriculum off a US resource and not an Australian one?

A neat resource that I think would have been relevant would be Cancer Council Australia's wiki aimed at med students. Perhaps a worthy addition to your aforementioned "for the student" page?

:)

This looks amazing!

Just want to know if there is a possibility for the competition to expand to year 11/12? Like maybe with harder test papers.

Hi pi, our team actually chanced upon that a couple of months ago. It is an absolutely awesome wiki on cancer, but we decided against basing our syllabus on that for fear that the material in the wiki might be a little too advanced for year 10 students. But definitely a worthy addition to our 'For the Student' page! Thanks pi!

Hey Victor,
Am I right in thinking that the answers to the four sample questions are D,B,A and C respectively?
Thanks :)

Looks correct to me :)

Fair enough, sometimes I forget what level school students are actually at these days hahahahaha :P
