VCE Summer School (VCESS) 2016 tutor applications open!

Hey all, hope holidays are going well. Just going to plug the VCE Summer School program for 2016!

Essentially it's a program run in the summer break at UoM (it's still #monashmasterrace tho) where uni students volunteer to teach small classes of (mainly) disadvantaged students in pretty much any VCE subject. I've been involved in the program for 3 years now, and I have found it to be a very enjoyable and rewarding experience, and I can't encourage all the brilliant minds of AN enough to take this as an opportunity to further give back to those who need it.

In terms of class dynamics from my experience, usually less than 10 people per class, and the students are highly motivated to do well because unfortunately their schools might be pretty shit I've still kept in touch with a few students through the years, and it's a great feeling to see them exceed their goals. Oh, and you also get a free T-shirt, that's the real winner here.

In addition to tutoring roles, there are many additional roles that also need filling to make the program yet another success. All of which would look handy on any CV

I'd been wondering: not being a uni student (or having a 'brilliant mind' ), am I eligible?  Would be disappointing if I can't join in, as my t-shirt draw's running low.

I was one of those kids (I didn't go to this but I went to the SWOT programs) only thing is I'm planning on doing a summer subject :/ so will have to suss things out a little. Thanks for the head up!!

Yeah I'm sure that's fine! They have interviews so you can explain to them your situation then. I feel they really look for passionate students who did well in their preferred VCE subject

Usually not unfortunately, probably because your results aren't released prior to applications and because the keen VCE-ers ask us stuff about uni life. Sorry mate.

From memory, usually tutors fill those. But no harm in asking them for an official response!

And fyi, they have a LOT of tutor support from senior tutors (some have PhDs and stuff), so if your low confidence is because of nerves, this is a great program to get involved in to get over those nerves!

I am very interested in contributing to this program in January. However, I will be studying abroad until the end of 2015, meaning that I won't be in Australia for the interview or training dates. I have sent off an email but just wanted to see if anybody has been in a similar position before.

I think they've had people in the past do that. Out of interest, what did they say?

Considering you’re studying abroad and legitimately can’t make it to training, we’re happy for you to apply – refresher day, which is run on Thursday 7th Jan 2016 will cover most of the training, and we can sit down with you afterwards if you feel you’re missing anything.

The interview can be held over skype or over the phone (please remember to take into account the time difference when you’re selecting when you’re available for interviews!).

Honestly not sure haha, I actually didn't apply this year (am too busy this summer unfortunately), but I can't remember getting one last year
